Obituary of David Gordon Bloxham

July 21, 1962 – Edmonton, Alberta
November 3, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta

We are heartbroken to deliver the news that David Gordon Bloxham passed away on Nov. 3, 2021, far too early at the age of 59, from a heart attack while riding his bike.

Dave was a friend to everyone and was always interested to learn about the people he met everyday. Helping other people and getting to know them was the most important thing to him in the world. Dave was crazy about the internal combustion engine – he loved everything about cars – fixing them, driving them, watching car racing, pit crewing on races, etc. Dave initially trained as an automotive technician, but the lack of jobs during the early 1980s caused him to transfer to theatre courses in Vancouver and Nanaimo. He then worked as a stage technician and production assistant for a variety of live theatres in western Canada. While working at the Banff Centre in Banff, Alberta he met his common-law wife, Maura Hamill, with whom he had a rich and rewarding life until his untimely passing. After the Banff Centre, Dave moved to Calgary in 1988 and once again worked in the automotive industry as a service technician until his retirement in 2019. He worked for Toyota, Subaru, and Honda, achieving a Red Seal Journeyman’s License with a Platinum Honda Canada certification, and then finished his career at Tesla. He was the kind of mechanic you would want to work on your car. He always took great pride in any work he did whether it was fixing someone’s car or a leaky faucet at home. Another great love in his life was the bicycle and he not only loved to ride his bikes, but he also learned how to fix them. After his retirement he helped many friends and neighbours get their bikes in tip top working order. He joined the organization Two Wheel View as a volunteer bike mechanic and helped them restore bikes to use in their programs helping young people. In addition to his enjoyment of mechanical things, he sang in many choirs, the last one being Enchor Chamber Choir in Calgary. Dave and Maura enjoyed travelling together and visited Paris, Hawaii several times, Ireland, Croatia, Costa Rica, the Bahamas, and many places in North America. However, he was happiest when he was at home, working on a project inside or outside the house. Although Dave was born in Edmonton, his family moved to the west coast of British Columbia, eventually settling in Powell River, B.C., where he grew up and attended school.

Dave leaves behind many people who are grieving his absence in their lives - his spouse, Maura Hamill; his father, John Bloxham; John’s wife Luda; his sisters, Barb Kenney, Jeannie Oele, and Shirley Murphy; many nieces and nephews, and all of his friends and neighbours who came to know him over the years. He was predeceased by his mother, June Bloxham, and his brother-in-law, Pete Oele. Donations in lieu of flowers to Twowheelview.org or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
