Obituary of James Stewart Howie

March 13, 1931 – Kindersley, Saskatchewan

It is with heavy hearts that we announce that James (Jim) Howie of Calgary, AB, passed away on Saturday, November 6, 2021, at the age of 90 years.

Jim was born in Kindersley, SK, on March 13, 1931, and experienced many of the adversities that came during the depression years. He came to Calgary in 1948 to enlist in the army, and during this time he met the love of his life, Elaine, who he married in 1951.  Soon after being married, Jim had to leave his love behind to go to Korea. Upon returning from Korea, Jim worked for Canadian Pacific until he joined Canadian Natural Gas where he worked his way up to Budget Coordinator.  In 1978, Jim created CalCity Developments, as he had an aptitude for construction. He continued to run the company until his retirement in 1998. After retirement, Jim continued to tinker, and assisted his family whenever there were small construction jobs.  But Jim's life was not all work. He loved family time with Elaine and his four children: Colleen, Joy, Jim Jr, and Brad, and enjoyed taking them on adventures through Alberta and BC. He could never pass one of those attractions at the side of the highway. Jim enjoyed fishing with his sons and, while they were not always successful, his wife never knew because he would "find" a fish to bring home. He also had quite the green thumb and spent hours out in his flower beds creating a haven for the many hummingbirds and bees. His garden was always admired by his neighbours and family.

Besides his loving wife of 70 years, Jim is survived by his one daughter, Colleen; one son, Brad; four grandchildren, Megan and Robyn Westgarth, and Adam and Sara Howie; three great-grandchildren, Liam and Lily Howie, and Preston Westgarth; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.  Jim was predeceased by his son Jim Howie, daughter Joy Howie, and grandson Shane Westgarth.
