Obituary of Reginald Dean Gomke

January 10, 1959 - Brooks, Alberta

November 8, 2021 - Calgary, Alberta

Reg Gomke, beloved husband of Mary Gomke (nee Levesque) of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 8, 2021 at 11:08 am, his wife and daughters by his bedside at the Agape Hospice. After courageously battling cancer for more than fifteen years, Reg is now free of the confines of his physical body.

A gentle and kind soul, Reg enjoyed nothing more than spending time at the family’s second home in Dutch Creek, BC; with their tight-knit group of friends, watching the grandkids play, and sitting by the fire with Mary and all those who came to visit. Reg had a finely tuned sense of humor, cracking jokes and making others laugh right up until his last days. He was also a dedicated and well-respected employee and colleague at Fortis Alberta, where he worked as a Director for the past seventeen years. Reg loved a fun game of golf, drinking a manhattan (or two) at family events and with friends, taking Scooter, his best canine buddy, for walks, and just spending quality time at home.

Reg will be deeply missed by his loving wife and soul mate, Mary, who devoted the past eighteen months to his palliative care; his daughters, Nicole and Michelle (David) who he was so proud of; his two amazing grandchildren, Mackenzie and Parker; his brothers, Terry (Linda) and Ivan; sister Karen (Murray); his mother and father-in-law, Gerry and Ted; and Mary’s sister and brothers; as well as his many nieces and nephews from both sides of the family. Reg will also be remembered by countless friends who loved him dearly.

Reg was predeceased by his mother, Margaret, and father, William; and his loyal best friend and dog Scooter.

The family will not be having any service for Reg at this time, but as the weather warms up, we hope to gather

outdoors, fire up the BBQ, and raise a toast to such a good man; celebrating his life and remembering all the good times. Condolences, memories, and photos can also be shared and viewed here.

Our deepest thanks go out to Reg’s oncology team; his homecare nurses who assisted Mary with his palliative care; and all the fantastic caregivers at the Agape Hospice. Their compassion and amazing medical talent were a godsend throughout Reg’s cancer journey.

If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made in Reg’s name directly to the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, 1331 29 Street NW Calgary, Alberta T2N 4N2, 403-521-3723, or to the Agapé Hospice, 1302 - 8 Avenue N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 1B8 Telephone: (403) 282-6588.
