Victor Feil

Obituary of Victor Wallace Jerry Feil

October 9, 1943 – Maple Creek, Saskatchewan
November 11, 2021 - Calgary, Alberta

This is the story of Victor Feil who was better known as Dad, Grandpa, Mr. Victor, Vic, or Vickie. (It was a common practice for his Mom to add an “ie”, or maybe it was a “y”, at the end of all of her sons’ first names.) We said an unexpected goodbye to this amazing and extraordinary man on Thursday, November 11, 2021 at the age of 78 after a surprising brain tumour diagnosis.

In the Academy Awards of Life, Victor would have been awarded for the best husband, father, son, brother, friend, teacher, and leader. He was patient, kind, intelligent, hard-working, understanding, and completely present for anyone who needed grounding advice or committed work on projects from start to completion. His workshop provided space and inspiration for his creations. He loved creating unconventional art, incredible doodles, collecting music records, and completing very challenging jigsaw puzzles. He could do, fix, and create anything.

Victor’s story begins in 1943, the third son born to Rose and August Feil. He was born in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan, and grew up on the family farm near Golden Prairie. During harsh Saskatchewan winters, Victor and his two older brothers were forced to grow up early as they had to live in town on their own to continue to attend school. Following high school, Victor bravely took on the world as a gas attendant in Regina, which kicked off his career as a power engineer. In 1966 Victor married the love of his life, Darlene. They lived in Burstall, Saskatchewan, where Victor worked as a gas plant operator and manager while maintaining a second career as a hard-working farmer. Their daughter Adrea joined the family in 1977, and in 1980, the family moved to Calgary, where Brennan joined the family in 1981. Victor continued his career as a gas plant manager, a commuting farmer, and later as a well-loved instructor at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology. Eventually, adventure and travel, as well as the opportunity to provide for his family, called him for a highly challenging role as a managing vice-president of a gas plant in Libya, where he was eventually forced into retirement by a war outbreak! We often joke that it literally took a war to finally force Dad into retirement. He was deeply appreciated and loved by all who were fortunate enough to meet him.

Loved ones who cleared the path for Victor are his father August, mother Rose, brother Ivan, sister-in-law Agnes, father-in-law Ted Frisz and mother-in-law Alvina Frisz. Loved ones who will cherish memories of Victor until they meet again are his wife of 55 years, Darlene (lovingly nicknamed Phunkie), his daughter Adrea, son Brennan, daughter-in-law Doris, granddaughter Laura, his brothers, Edward and Wesley; sisters-in-law, Barb Feil, Stephanie Feil, Kathy Frisz (Brian Thomson); nieces, Erin and Annalisa; and nephew Corey.
