Obituary of Ilona Szakacs
November 24, 1921 – Edeleny, Borsod, Hungary
December 3, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Ilona (Piroska) Szakacs of Calgary, AB on Friday, December 3, 2021, nine days after her 100th birthday, with her son Bob by her side.
Ilona was born in Edeleny, Borsod, Hungary, on November 24, 1921. In 1956, Ilona immigrated to Canada with her husband and three of their children. They settled in Calgary, where Ilona worked tirelessly to build a home and future for her family. She loved to cook and bake and having family dinners was a highlight of her life. She always had a bountiful garden, preserved her harvest and enjoyed fishing, camping and trips to soak in the hot springs in the Rocky Mountains.
Ilona is survived by her sons, Steve and Bob (Terry). She had eight grandchildren, Darren and Delia Enevoldson, Stephanie, Anthony, Suzanne, Britney, Jona and Chelsey Szakacs; as well as eight great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two nieces, Marika (Hungary) and Piroska (Gibsons). She was predeceased by her husband Istvan (Steve); daughters, Anna Watson and Ilona Enevoldson.
