Obituary of James Flaxman Garner

November 2, 1928 – Chatham, Ontario

December 4, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta

 

James (Jim) Garner passed away peacefully with family by his side on Saturday, December 4, 2021. Jim was in his ninety-fourth year and had been battling several health issues, including failing eyesight.

 

Jim expressed hope that in the afterlife he might rejoin his beloved wife Doris Garner who predeceased him on September 15, 2021.

 

Jim had a lifelong career in the general insurance business after graduating from the University of Western Ontario in 1952. He began his career in Toronto. Subsequently he moved to Edmonton in 1954 and then to Calgary in 1959 where he joined Toole Peet and Co. Limited where he remained until his retirement as Vice-President, Director and Co-Manager of the Insurance Department in 1994. Jim was a Past President of the Insurance Institute of Southern Alberta and a Past Director of the Insurance Institute of Canada and the Insurance Brokerage Association of Alberta.

 

Jim was a long-time member of Earl Grey Golf Club and enjoyed curling and mountain hiking. In his retirement, Jim continued and developed his interest in philanthropy based on his lifelong principles of personal responsibility, fiscal conservatism and helping others.

 

Jim was grateful for the caring staff and many new friends at The Manor Village at Fish Creek Park where Jim and Doris lived for the past three years.

 

He is survived by his stepson Peter Stevenson (Helena Chavarria); and four grandchildren, Nicholas Stevenson, Natalie Stevenson, Diego Stevenson, and Emilio Hernandez. He is also survived by his niece Anne Garner (John McLeod), nephew Jim Garner (Sally) and niece Marion Garner (Dean Bernard); and his four grandnieces and grandnephews, Kate and Jill Garner, Lily Bernard, and Kevin McLeod.

 

Jim was predeceased by his loving wife Doris, his parents Doris and James Garner, and his brother Gordon (Gord) Garner.

 

A Private Family Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, December 9, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. Due to current COVID conditions family would encourage those not invited to view Funeral Services via Livestream below on the day of the service.
