Obituary of Elisabeth Ponnage Fonseka

April 9, 1951 – Dankotuwa, Sri Lanka

December 8, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta

Elisabeth Fonseka of Calgary, AB, passed away on Wednesday, December 8, 2021, at the age of 70 years.

Elisabeth was born in Dankotuwa, Sri Lanka on April 9, 1951. Elisabeth graduated from Jinarathana Central College. She immigrated to Canada in 1992. When she moved to Canada she worked as a live-in caregiver and worked with only one family for twenty years. Elisabeth accomplished much through her life and was particularly proud of when she brought her son to Canada from Sri Lanka. Her most memorable vacation was when she went back home to Sri Lanka. Elisabeth also had many hobbies such as knitting, sewing, reading, and singing. She will be most remembered for her ability to be an Amma to everyone, especially her son’s friends and their families.

Elisabeth is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Shelton and Jingle of Calgary, AB; and one grandchild, Liam. She is also survived by five brothers and five sisters-in-law, Francis Fonseka and Leeta Nirangani, Clemon Fonseka and Kusuma Bulathsinghala, Basil and Arunasilee Fonseka, Densil and Ursula Fonseka, and George Anthony and Dilani Manjula; two sisters and two brothers-in-law, Terons and Lelee Margaret Senarath, and Geetha Practrishiya and Ajith Rohana; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Elisabeth was predeceased by her parents, Anna Perera and Edwin Fonseka.

Funeral Services will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB) on Tuesday, December 14, 2021, at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home. Those attending will be asked to provide valid government identification (with name and date of birth) AND confirm one of the following: (A)Provincial vaccine record with QR code (paper or digital); OR (B)negative COVID test (within 72 hours); or (C)valid medical exemption (signed letter); OR (D)under 12 years of age. Thank you to all our friends who spared their precious time to cook and feed Amma while she was in Extendicare Villa. Thank you to all the healthcare workers who gave their best care to Amma. And to her Boss, Juneth, and his kids who never failed to call and check when she was in the hospital and Extendicare Villa.
