Obituary of Joan Christine Wilson

Joan Christine Wilson (nee Calfchild) of Calgary, AB, passed away on Friday, December 10, 2021, at the age of 73 years.

 

Joan was born in Ponoka, AB, on August 26, 1948, to Sophia Manyhorses and John Fraser, into a family with seven siblings. She moved to High River, AB, with her family as a child, and later in life settled down in Calgary, AB. Joan loved school. As a proud student and teacher, she was educated in many backgrounds, and graduated from the University of Calgary (UofC) with degrees in Social Work, Criminology, Vocational (VOCA), Non-Destructive Testing (NDT), and much more.  Joan was married to Jim Caldwell, and they had two children, Guy and Christine. Later, she remarried for forty years to Doug Wilson.  Joan was also a proud member of Efry Society, Treaty 7, and the UofC. Joan accomplished much through her life and was passionate about helping native women, families, and anyone in need.

 

Joan lived a full life with a passion for her family. She loved traveling and was proud to experience most of the world. Some of her favourite locations being Spain and Belize. She worked to help people, enjoyed her books, sharing stories, camping, barbecues, bingo, music, singing, dancing, driving fast, and much more. Joan experienced the beauty and the hardships of life, using her understanding and knowledge, she could bring out the best potential in anyone. Joan liked to say, “life is a gift” and “I’ll decide” ultimately honoring her family values. She Decided. Raised in a family that adapted native tradition, Joan worked hard to raise her people. She helped her family and friends unconditionally with her love and support. She enjoyed a wide spectrum of music, some of her favourite’s included, What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong, Stand By Me by Ben E King, the band of the Four Horse Men, and so many more.

 

Joan is survived by her daughter Christine, her son Guy, her three grandchildren, and innumerable family members and close friends from around the world. Joan was predeceased by her seven sisters and brothers, Marry, Raina, Thomas, Stephen, Joan, Victoria, and Marilyn.
