Hazel Purdy

Obituary of Hazel Lucille Purdy

August 12, 1928 - December 10, 2021

Hazel passed away peacefully on December 10, 2021, at the age of 93.  Preceded in death by her husband Earl; she is survived by her children, Glen (Betty), Darrel (Lisa) and Lynda; grandsons Drew (Jill), Michael (Pheelan), Aaron (Haley) and Cory (Angelica); sister-in-law Jean (George) Simpson and brother-in-law Andrew (Carol) Purdy of BC.

Hazel was born on the family farm just north of Vantage, SK. She spent her youth working the farm with her siblings who all predeceased her; Fred (Ev) Campbell, Jean (Harry) Cropp & Ron Campbell, all of Moose Jaw, SK.  Hazel moved to Moose Jaw in her twenties where she worked in the Accounts Dept. for Swift Canadian and where she met her husband-to-be Earl.  The couple were married at St. Andrew’s United Church on June 16, 1951.  Shortly after, the couple decided that their future lay in Calgary and in 1952 they headed west. Now part of the Stampede grounds, Hazel and Earl first lived in a small apartment in Victoria Park.  It was here that they added to their family, with the birth of their son Glen. They also added in the building of a home on the North Hill, where Glen would get a brother Darrel and sister Lynda to share in their parent’s love. Over 60 years of life on the North Hill saw Hazel joining Pleasant Heights United Church and volunteering with many of their ladies groups and events, canvassing for various charities, helping out at King George School & events at Canadian Western Natural Gas where Earl went to work, coffee breaks with the neighbourhood ladies, sewing clothes and costumes for herself and the kids, weekends of fishing and camping, having garage sales, hosting friends & relatives, having wonderful meals and card parties, and in the 80s getting a part-time job at Sears.  Hazel had a strong work ethic, an unbreaking commitment to her community, and a deep love for her family and friends. Hazel and Earl were together for 50 years, until Earl passed in 2000.  With her kids all out of the house, Hazel was able to take up a new past-time --- travel.  At first she travelled with friends and relatives around Canada, the US and Europe.  When she was ready to travel further afield, her daughter Lynda was more than willing to help carry her bags.  Hazel saw and shopped a large part of the world.  She was in her glory seeing the Wonders of the World, while poking through a Turkish bazaar or shopping in a Dubai mall.  Hazel’s travels came to a stop with COVID, but she loved talking about her trips with anyone who would listen.  It is this love of life we will remember, as Hazel takes this one last trip alone.
