Obituary of Michael Rooney

Michael Patrick Rooney, of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 14, 2021, at the age of 71 years in the presence of family who loved him very much.

 

Michael was born in Calgary, Alberta on March 7, 1950, to parents Gerald and Margaret Rooney.  His family moved to Phoenix, AZ when Michael was seven and then at the age of twelve he moved to Fernie, B.C., follow by another move at age thirteen to Vancouver where he settled until 1985.  In 1985, he moved back to Calgary, with his mother, where he spent the rest of his life with his loving family.

 

He was a member of the Boy Scouts as a youth and went on to work for Canada Post for 25 years where he became the Vice President of the Union. He retired in 2005.

 

Michael enjoyed watching TV, especially movies.  He was a Montreal Canadiens fan and had hoped to watch them win another Stanley Cup.  He also was an avid race car fan. He was devout to his religion and believed in helping his fellow humans.  His most memorable vacations were when he visited Hawaii with his mother, Cuba with the Postal Union, and the Philippines for his nephew's wedding. He will be most remembered for his kindness, helping and consideration of others, sense of humour, and his smile.

 

Michael is survived by his brother Tim Rooney (Fien); his niece Karina Shelton (Michael); and his nephew Michael Rooney (Romina). Michael was predeceased by his parents, Gerald and Margaret Rooney.

 

A Public Visitation will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Eastside, 5388 Memorial Drive NE, Calgary, AB) on Tuesday, December 21, 2021 starting at 4:00 p.m. with Prayers and Tributes to follow at 5:00 p.m. Those attending will be asked to provide valid government identification (with name and date of birth) AND confirm one of the following: (A)Provincial vaccine record with QR code (paper or digital); OR (B)negative COVID test (within 72 hours); or (C)valid medical exemption (signed letter); OR (D)under 12 years of age. Family and friends who are unable to attend in person are invited to join Mr. Rooney’s prayers streamed live (see below). For those who are unable to view live, a recording of the service will be posted.

 

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mark’s Catholic Church (5552 Madigan Drive N.E., Calgary, AB) on Wednesday, December 22, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at Mountain View Memorial Gardens. Condolences, memories and photos can also be shared and viewed here.
