Obituary of Lydia Weisbrot

WEISBROT, Lydia Matilda (nee Maurer)

June 16, 1932 - Goodeve, Saskatchewan

December 21, 2021 - Calgary, Alberta

It is with heavy hearts that our family announces the peaceful passing of Lydia Matilda Weisbrot in Calgary, Alberta on Tuesday, December 21st, 2021, at the age of 89 years.

Lydia was born Lydia Maurer, the youngest of five children, on June 16th, 1932, in Goodeve, Saskatchewan. She began attending grade school in Duff, Saskatchewan and then moved to Grenfell, Saskatchewan where she graduated with a grade twelve diploma—quite an accomplishment in those days. In 1950, she moved to Regina to work for Saskatchewan Government Telephones, and soon after she met her future husband, Edwin Weisbrot. Edwin and Lydia were married at Regina’s Grace Lutheran Church in 1955, and quickly started a family. A decade later, in 1965, they moved to Calgary, Alberta, where they found their true calling together as self-employed antique dealers, a profession they pursued for nearly 40 years before retiring.

Lydia had a heart for community and put her passion to use by getting involved in all manner of charitable organizations and ministries through Grace Lutheran church in Calgary. She gave her time and talents to everything from the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (LWML), Prayer Chains, and Inn from the Cold to turkey dinners and church garage sales. Lydia also had a deep love for family which was evident in her enjoyment of gardening, cooking, baking, and hosting dinners. She never said no to a good card game, either!

Lydia is survived by her children, Dana Weisbrot (Catherine), Linda Hovdebo, and Kurt Weisbrot (Tarralee); and her grandchildren, Roland Weisbrot (Rachel) and Kristian Hovdebo.

She was predeceased by husband Edwin Weisbrot; son Randy Weisbrot; and son-in-law Ron Hovdebo.
