Obituary of Frank Szalma

January 25, 1939 - Subotica, Serbia

December 22, 2021 - Calgary, Alberta

Frank Szalma (Ferenc, Feri, Feribácsi, Ferko, Dad, Apu, Apos, Nagypapa), beloved soul mate (husband) of Elizabeth Szalma (Erzsi) of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 22, 2021, at the age of 82 years.

Frank was born in Subotica to Ferenc and Etel Szalma; their first born. He completed his Degree in the Tool and Die Maker apprenticeship and worked with the company Sever. After a loving courtship with Elizabeth, they married in 1963 and moved to Canada in 1966.

Frank was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather; family was his priority!

He enjoyed a variety of sports, in particular soccer, whether with his coworkers, friends or watching a good match on television. He often took on challenges at work and around the house and would, without fail, lend a helping hand to his family and friends. He enjoyed the outdoors, camping, hiking, fishing, gardening, and photography. He had a way of planning perfect outings, he enriched his family and those visiting, ensuring their visit always went beyond expectations; even a simple szalona sütés (bacon roast) was to be remembered with laughter and fondness.

He enjoyed family vacations in and around Alberta and BC, primarily at Christina Lake, and with Elizabeth on their winter trips with the motorhome to Palm Springs and vacations to Hawaii.

We are grateful to have had as much time with him as we did, he is missed.

Frank is survived by his true love and wife of nearly 59 years, Elizabeth; their daughters and sons-in-law, Susana "Zsuzsi" Somogyvari (George), Elsie Szalma, Nancy Lassu (Robert); their grandchildren, Gábor and Anikó Lassu. He is also survived by his two sisters-in-law, Magda Szalma (wife of his brother Lajos), and Agota Bosnyak; as well as beloved cousins and friends.

He was Predeceased by his parents, Ferenc and Etel and his brother Lajos.

“Although we cannot see your smile or hear your voice, deep down in our hearts, we know your presence is here with us always.”
