Obituary of Cameron Gary Hunter

“Maxazu hmûga thâhne ye”
Uncle Monkey / Handsome
January 31, 1973 – Bighorn, Alberta
December 23, 2021 – Morley, Alberta

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, son, brother, uncle, grandpa, cousin, nephew, and friend, Cameron Gary Hunter.

He was born and raised in Bighorn, and lived in Maskawcis and Morley. He attended Morley Indian Day school and Ermineskin School. He completed various life skills and training programs, as well as worked different jobs.

Cameron was a very humble, respectful and kind, compassionate man. He greeted everyone with a smile, hug or handshake, often leaving you laughing. He was humorous, loved to tease and joke around with those around him.  Cameron was a true warrior, who overcame many difficulties in his life. He was a forgiving and loving man, a protector to his nieces, nephews and grandchildren. He was the kind of man that would give out the shirt off his back.  He respected and practiced (as best he could) his traditional customs.

Cameron loved to dance – Powwow, Sundance, Roundance,  Twostep and  even breakdancing. He danced with anyone anywhere; he was even taught the floss by his granddaughter. In his younger days he loved to hunt and snare. He loved all sorts of sports: hockey, swimming, baseball, volleyball and golf were his favourite. He taught himself to play hockey and became a “peanut” hockey player at the age of 5 and further advanced to minor hockey. He was a diehard Calgary Flames fan, never missed a game, you’d often needed ear plugs as he cheered on “his” team. He loved to play baseball and volleyball with his nieces and nephews. He was an all-around man.

Cameron is survived by his children, Rod Lightning (Sylas, Crystal),  Melvina Ear (Merlon, Caleb, Blaine, Alexa), Shyiesha Manywounds, and Issac Hunter; companion Raymona Rabbit, her children and grandchildren; mother Mary Jane Beaver; sisters, Krista, Lorraine, Marlene, Alice, Thelma, Verna (Tyrone), Leanne, Frances, Chip, Nancy, and Lydia; brothers, Nigel, Preston, Brendan, Shaun and Lyndon; special nieces and nephews, Alanna (Albey), Alysia (Alkohta, Alkiah, Alkiyan, Honey, Valley), Kreelin, Keely (Kari, Karson), Alieka (Larry), Albert Jr. Kaquitts, Agnes Abraham, Kobe, Emilio, Paden, Robs Poucette, Brianna, Marlin, Dez Morin, Mandy, Gail, Jamie, Nate, Cory Beaver, Tylen, Aprilvonna, Cherith Poucette, Marcia, Choosemine, Sunshine, Mark Jr. Poucette, Trevor, Raquel, Denny, Rayshel, Sherman Manywounds, Christina, Anna, Jerrie, Ethan Crowchief, Wyatt, Jaret, Myers, Tysa, Neil, Leah, Melvette, Orrie, Rowena, Brandon, Lenora, Melissa, Tanya, and their children; father Rod Hunter; sisters, Nadine, Shanda; brother, Anders; aunties, Tina, Colleen, Cindy; uncle Gerald; his numerous paternal Hunter nieces and nephews; extended relatives and aunties: Georgie K, Barbara H, Florence J, Mary K, Yvonne H; cousins, Randy B, Howard B, Nelson B, Berva and Barbara, Ethel S, Darrel (Ina); sisters-in-law, Winnie B, Maryjane B.; paternal aunties, Sylvia, Nelda and family; uncle Benny Francis and family.
