Obituary of Hartley SILVER

December 4, 1959—Toronto, Ontario

December 27, 2021—Calgary, Alberta

Markham Silver, Q.C. peacefully passed away, surrounded by family, in Calgary, AB on December 27th, 2021. Born in Toronto, he moved to Calgary 23 years ago with his family and immediately became an essential figure in the community. Markham was a passionate advocate, a dedicated mentor, and a loving husband and father. Markham treated everyone equally with respect, no matter who they were, where they came from, and what their problems were—he was a fixer. He generously gave to others with no expectation of reward.

His passion for the law was rooted in his sensitivity and understanding of people, his commitment to justice, and deep fascination with the nuances of legal argument. Markham’s great love and enthusiasm for the law extended across his practice as a criminal defence lawyer to his work with legal aid. Markham also helped guide and mentor countless law students at the University of Calgary Faculty of Law, where he taught.

Markham’s impact on the community was deeply meaningful and personal. He was a mentor and advisor to everyone. He especially enjoyed his connection to the Jewish community be it his hauntingly beautiful reading of the Torah, his powerful blowing of the shofar on the High Holidays, or his imitable conducting of board meetings.

He pursued the activities outside his community and professional involvement with the same excellence and vigour. Markham was always keen to learn, bringing that impetus to all facets of his life. As a master guitarist, Markham could be heard playing his favourite songs well into the night. He took a great interest in flying, cooking, and was constantly learning new languages. He amassed thousands of photographs in his travels around the world with his loved ones. His passion for life was infectious and brought joy to those around him.

Markham was a creative, supportive, and engaged husband and father. He is lovingly remembered by his soul-mate Lisa, and beloved children Joshua and Rebecca (Aiden); his mother Doreen, sister Eve (Henning), and brothers Shimon (Caryn) and James (Lisa). He also leaves many relatives and friends around the world. He will be greatly missed by all.

A private graveside service will be held at the Erlton Jewish Cemetery, (Corner of Erlton Street and 30 Avenue SW, Calgary, AB).

The family would like to thank the many doctors and staff at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre who provided their constant support to Markham during his illness. We would also like to thank the doctors and staff at Rockyview General Hospital, including the nurses on Unit 72. We are grateful for your care and concern during this difficult time.

He left us too soon. But left us with hope, and as our mentor, he prepared us to continue his good works.
