Richard (Dick) Halton

Obituary of Richard (Dick) David Halton

July 23, 1935 - Didsbury, Alberta

December 28, 2021 - Calgary, Alberta

Richard Halton of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully, on Tuesday, December 28, 2021 at the age of 86 years.

Dick was born in Didsbury, AB, on July 23, 1935. He graduated from Western Canada High. Dick went on to marry his beloved wife Ruth in 1964 and they were inseparable for 48 years. He worked as manager for AGT/Telus and after his retirement, Dick discovered a love for hockey and played multiple times a week all the way into his early 80's. When talking about his hockey accomplishments, his family would lovingly refer to him as “Mighty Dick” because though small in stature, he never backed down from the bigger or younger players. For many years, he and his wife Ruth would drive to Ontario in the summer in their motorhome to see their daughter, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Dick accomplished much through his life and was particularly proud of his family and his career which allowed him to retire early to travel a bit and then care for his wife Ruth for many years, with patience and love that his family so admired and will never forget. Dick will be most remembered for his generosity, witty sense of humour and love of (usually off colour) limericks.  He also enjoyed writing poetry.

MY PRAYER

By Dick Halton

“Oh Lord above, I ask that thee

Will keep my soul in sight,

And guide it when my time has come

With your most heavenly light

And when dear Lord it reaches You

Upon my judgement day

Please find a corner in your heart

For it dear Lord to stay

And while I'm here on earth dear Lord

Please cleanse my sins away

Give me the strength to do what's right

No matter come what may

Help me to make life easier

For anyone I see

That never had the privilege

That you Lord gave to me"

Dick is survived by his stepdaughter, Eva Knittle (Blackbourne) of Windsor, ON; two grandchildren, Desirée Weil (Rob) of Wheatley, ON, and Shane Knittle (Kimberley) of Windsor, ON; and two great-grandchildren, Derek and David of Wheatley, ON. Dick is also survived by his dear friend, Judy Smith, and his sister Joyce (Lyle) Bruner. Waiting for him at heavens gates with a bag of quarters and a deck of cards, was his wife Ruth Halton (nee Birkett). Dick was also predeceased by his parents, Anna Elizabeth (nee Clemens) and James Woods Halton, brother William Halton, and sister Shirley Zatrepalek.
