Obituary of Martin Peter Vandenbeld

October 24, 1950 – Deventer, Holland
January 1, 2022 – Calgary, Alberta

Our beloved dad, Martin Vandenbeld, passed away on January 1, 2022, at the age of 71.

Born in Deventer, Holland on October 24, 1950, Martin was the youngest of four children.  His early years were spent enjoying all that Dutch life had to offer before immigrating with his family to Canada at age nine.  They settled into life in Bowness where he quickly adapted to Canadian living with a large extended family of aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Music was an integral part of life in the Vandenbeld home and when he started high school at Saint Francis, he joined the school band and learned to play the trumpet.  It was during his time in high school that Martin was introduced to Peggy by her brother Larry. Romance quickly followed and in 1970 they were married and embarked on a fifty-one-year life together.  The love of music continued as they formed various bands, Peggy singing and Martin playing the keyboard and trumpet.  In 1976 they welcomed their first child Angie, followed by Matt in 1978.

Life was full of family adventures like trips to Hawaii, Disneyland and many summers at Christina and Mara Lake.  Martin was truly an amazing dad, always coaching, volunteering, and cheering on his kids in whatever they were doing.  This continued when he became grandad to Mattea, Victoria, Nora, Isabelle and Callie, and great-grandad to Kaleb.  He attended every dance recital and competition and all the activities they took part in. Martin cherished every moment with his grandchildren.  He was never without a smile and a word of encouragement.  Martin truly lived up to his rule that no matter what, Dad is always there for you.

Martin loved his work and retired several times, never seeming to be able to truly stop finding projects to do.  He always had something on the go and his work took him all the way to Dubai where he and Peggy made many friends.

Martin and Peggy’s home was the place everyone wanted to be for a good time and Martin was loved by so many.  He never turned anyone away and he was like a father and grandfather to so many people. We will miss his warm heart, big hugs, and infectious laugh.  We will miss him being the life of the party, but we know the music plays on in our hearts forever.

Martin is survived by his wife Peggy, his two children, Angie (Lenard) and Matt; his grandchildren, great-grandson, his sister Annemieke Henri, and brother John Vandenbeld. He was predeceased by his brother Herman.
