Obituary of Robert David Baylis

June 16, 1962 – Vancouver, British Columbia

January 22, 2022 – Calgary, Alberta

Robert “Rob” Baylis, beloved husband of Charline Boyer, of Calgary, AB, passed away on Saturday, January 22, 2022, at the age of 59 years.

Rob was born in North Vancouver to James and Marianne Baylis on June 16, 1962.  As an elite swimmer, he was inducted into the BC Swimming Sports Hall of Fame in September of 2012 and was a member of the 1980 Canadian National Olympic team.  He was an active alumni of the Olympic Committee and was proud to have been invited to the 2012 Olympic trials, where the 1980 Olympic team was honored 32 years after the boycott.  Rob was very active in the Douglasdale community as a Scout leader and soccer coach and was a strong supporter of the Epilepsy Association of Calgary, including his promoting of “purple shirt day” every Thursday.

Long time partners, Rob and Charline married on September 26, 2020.  Together they joined as a family and experienced and enjoyed vacations such as camping, ski trips, trips all over BC and trips to Mexico, and were active members of the Douglasdale golf community.  Rob enjoyed scuba diving with his son, Nick, on the west coast and Mexico, and accompanying his daughter Alex on her band trips in the US and Canada.  Regardless of where Rob was or what he was doing, his daughter Lauren was always in his thoughts and held dearly in his heart.  Rob was very well known to his neighbors and community.  He had a very strong sense of family, fairness, and generosity, which endeared him to all who knew him. 

Besides his loving wife, Rob is survived by his son Nicholas, his daughter Alexandra; his stepchildren Jordan (Linda) and grandchild Rosemary, Luke (Katenlyn); his siblings Denny, Barry, Patricia and their families; Aunt Georgina Montgomery and many cousins.  He was predeceased by his daughter Lauren, and parents James and Marianne.

Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at McInnis & Holloway (Deerfoot South, 12281 – 40th Street SE, Calgary, AB) on Friday, January 28, 2022, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.  Funeral Services will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Deerfoot South, 12281 – 40th Street SE, Calgary, AB) on Saturday, January 29, 2022, at 2:00 p.m., with a reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home. Those attending will be asked to provide valid government identification (with name and date of birth) AND confirm one of the following: (A)Provincial vaccine record with QR code (paper or digital); OR (B)negative COVID test (within 72 hours); or (C)valid medical exemption (signed letter); OR (D)under 12 years of age.
