Obituary of Lawrence Hudon

HUDON, Lawrence Joseph

June 15, 1931 – Arborfield, Saskatchewan

January 22, 2022 – Calgary, Alberta

Lawrence Hudon, a true gentleman, passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 90 years on Saturday, January 22, 2022.

In 1931, Lawrence was born in Arborfield, Saskatchewan to Arthur and Herveline Hudon. In the early 1940’s the family moved from the farm to Flin Flon, Manitoba.   After becoming a scout and an air cadet, he worked for the Hudson’s Bay Mining & Smelting Co.  Lawrence moved to Saskatoon to attend St. Thomas Moore College, and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree, then he continued to the University of Saskatchewan where he received his Law Degree. There, he excelled in athletics and earned the University’s top athletic award five years in a row and became an Olympic-class basketball player.  In his spare time, he formed a singing quintet called the ‘Six Golden Voices’.

After graduating from law school Lawrence went to Fort St. John to work with Pacific Petroleum.  A year later he moved to Calgary to work with British American Petroleum (Gulf Canada), where he practiced law in the Law Department for over 35 years. Lawrence was introduced to Shelagh O’Connor by his law school friend, and he fell in love with his Irish lass and her large O’Connor family.

Lawrence enjoyed regular Chestermere Lake gatherings which included playing cards and sailing, and he took pride in organizing various construction projects there. He loved organizing many Hudon family reunions to maintain close contact with his extended family, and he cherished the get-togethers with his university friends through their Gourmet Club, which went on for 40 years.

After retirement, for Lawrence and Shelagh golf was the primary recreation and they drove to Highwood Golf and Country Club as members for 40 years.  In the winter, southern California was the destination of choice as snowbirds.  Golf, card games and enjoying the sunshine with many friends and family, figured prominently during these sojourns.  Travels to Ireland and France were also favourites

A respected member of the community, Lawrence served as President of the Canadian Petroleum Law Foundation and was a long-time member of a Catholic men’s club The Calysmen Club.  He quietly supported numerous charities with a generous heart.

Lawrence is remembered for his quiet and thoughtful demeanor.  He was a man of few words, but those words would be measured and considerate. Ever a gentleman, he was truthful, loyal, and principled. He loved a good joke, a great round of golf and a fine scotch.  Above all, he was happiest when surrounded by his family.

He leaves behind his beautiful bride of 62 years, Shelagh; his children, Tom, Sue, Daniel, Joe, Patti (Mark) and his grandchildren, Andrew (Kelsey), James, Meaghan (Levi), Samuel (Sarah), Caleigh, Raeghan, Tessa, and Sean.  He is also survived by his siblings, Geneviève, John (Maxine), Lionel (Mary), Suzanne, Dan (Lana) and Louise and many nieces and nephews.

Lawrence is predeceased by his daughter Terrie and her husband Andy Bryant.
