Obituary of Dr. John Lloyd Gosbee

December 25, 1941 - Charlottetown, PEI

January 29, 2022 - Calgary, Alberta

Dr. John Lloyd Gosbee of Calgary, Alberta passed away on on Saturday, January 29, 2022 at the age of 80 years.

John was born on December 25, 1941 in Prince Edward Island to parents, John and Sybil Gosbee.  At the age of fourteen, John made the difficult decision to leave home in order to have the opportunity to continue his education.  His perseverance and dedication to his studies eventually brought him to Queens University in Kingston, ON, where he received a Bachelor of Science with Honours, a Master of Science in Biology and a PhD in Philosophy.  John and the love of his life Edna, then moved to Calgary where he received his medical degree from the University of Calgary.

John was a highly respected member of the medical community.  He was an advocate for both his patients and colleagues alike. After retiring from his private practice, John finished his career caring for patients in long term care, stroke rehabilitation and palliative care.  He served as the President of the Calgary General Hospital, President of the Alberta Medical Association, and President of the Rotary Club International, as well as multiple board positions through-out his career and retirement.

Despite his successful career, nothing meant more to John than his family. He was the happiest in the kitchen of his home in Varsity preparing meals for family gatherings, bridge parties and was blessed to have a large circle of kind, caring and amazing friends. His spare time was spent at the Calgary Winter Club playing bridge and curling, golfing at Country Hills Golf Club, socializing at the Silver Springs Golf and Country Club, watching hockey and gardening. Known as a “walking encyclopedia” to his children and grandchildren, he enjoyed sharing his knowledge with anyone who would listen. He preached the importance of education while simultaneously following one’s dreams.  He was extremely proud of his children and grandchildren and supported them in whatever way was required.

John leaves to mourn his daughter Jean Gosbee (Dean Callaway) and her children, Ty, Jessica and Tayden; and his grandchildren, John, Carter and Isla.  Also missing John are Elsie Peters (Wayne) of Prince Edward Island, Mary Martin (Norman) of Ontario, and John Bryans (Kaaren) of Ontario; as well as countless other family members and friends. John was predeceased by his son George in 2017 and his wife Edna in 2021.

A special thank you to Dr. Don and Sandy Markowsky, Keith and Margi Molyneux, Don and Sherry Campbell, and Hilary Turner for their unwavering love and support throughout the years.

Due to the pandemic, a Celebration of John and Edna Gosbee’s Life will be held at a later date. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed here.

Dear Dad,

 Remembering you is easy

I do it all the day

Missing you is the heartache

That will never go away

If tears could build a stairway

And memories a lane

I would walk right up to heaven

And bring you back again

Mom and George have greeted you

And taken away your pain

You are the brightest stars I see

Until we are together again

 Love Jean
