Obituary of Lewis Gerald Schmaltz

Lewis Schmaltz, beloved husband of Alice Schmaltz (nee Schwengler), of Calgary, AB, passed away on Sunday, January 30, 2022 at the age of 82 years.

Lewis moved to Calgary, AB, at the same time as his soon-to-be wife, Alice, moved from Beiseker, AB. Once in Calgary, Lewis entered the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology’s (SAIT) Automotive Technology program where he graduated and soon began his career as a mechanic at the GSL dealership. Lewis also worked with the City of Calgary as a transit mechanic for over 25 years where he met some great friends and had some great memories. He was an honourary member of the Local 583 Amalgamated Transit Union for fifty-years.

Lewis will be fondly remembered for his love of Jersey Milk chocolate bars, and his passion for playing and watching hockey. He loved spending his weekends with family and friends, especially his son and daughter-in-law Brian Schmaltz and Cathy Young, and daughter and son-in-law Beverly and Vern Kuckartz and their families. Lewis and Alice had a passion for Disney Land which they passed onto their children and grandchildren, sharing many trips over the years that will be remembered forever. Lewis loved spending time outdoors and in his trailer where the family would visit with him and his wife.

Besides his loving wife of fifty-nine years, Alice Schmaltz, Lewis will be lovingly remembered by his son and daughter-in-law Brian Schmaltz and Cathy Young of Calgary, AB, daughter and son-in-law Beverly and Vern Kuckartz of Calgary, AB; four grandchildren, Alicia Schmaltz, Craig Schmaltz, Calvin Kuckartz, and Brooke Kuckartz of Calgary, AB; three brothers and three sisters-in-law, Don and Evelyn Schmaltz of Kelowna, BC, Clair and Thelma Schmaltz of Calgary, AB, and Terry and Noni Schmaltz of Calgary, AB; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.

A Service of Remembrance for Lewis will be held at McInnis and Holloway (Crowfoot, 82 Crowfoot Circle NW, Calgary, AB), on Thursday, February 3, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home. Those attending will be asked to provide valid government identification (with name and date of birth) AND confirm one of the following: (A)Provincial vaccine record with QR code (paper or digital); OR (B)negative COVID test (within 72 hours); or (C)valid medical exemption (signed letter); OR (D)under 12 years of age.
