Obituary of Edith Thekla Bednar

March 19, 1932 – Drasenhofen, Austria

February 5, 2022 – Calgary, Alberta

With sadness and love we announce the passing of Edith Bednar on Saturday, February 5, 2022 at the age of 89 years.

Edith was born in Austria on March 19th, 1932, she immigrated to Canada when she was only 22 years old with her sister. Edith settled in Calgary where she started working not knowing the language, she was lucky that she met her husband Walter who was working at the York Hotel at the time. Throughout their married years she took on work wherever she could to help support the family then finally retired from the Bay. She enjoyed being around people and spending time with family. Edith traveled back to Austria numerous times and also traveled to Hawaii, Mexico and the Caribbean. Edith was a very good cook and loved to bake, she enjoyed cooking along with her husband for many family celebrations throughout the years. Looking back at a lifetime of memories most photographs are of family sitting around the dining room table.

When I die give what’s left of me away

To children and old men that wait to die.

And if you need to cry,

Cry for your brother walking in the street beside you.

And when you need me, put your arms around anyone

And give them what you need to give me.

I want to leave you something,

Something better than words or sounds.

Look for me in the people I’ve known or loved,

And if you cannot give me away,

At least let me live in your eyes and not in your mind.

You can love me best by letting hands touch hands,

And by letting go of children that need to be free.

Love doesn’t die, people do.

So, when all that’s left of me is love,

Give me away.
