Rosemarie Eyck (nee Schmidt)

Obituary of Rosemarie Helene Renata Eyck (nee Schmidt)

January 29, 1924 - Cologne, Germany

February 11, 2022 - Calgary, Alberta

Rosemarie Eyck (nee Schmidt) died peacefully on February 11, 2022 at the age of 98.  She is survived by her sons, Andrew and his wife Ninfa, and George and his wife Tes; and two grandchildren, Brandon Eyck and Alphonse Uy all of Calgary. She was predeceased by her brother Wolfgang Schmidt.

After her family moved to Berlin in the 1930s they attended St. Ann's Church in Dahlem, Berlin, which was a center of German Resistance to the Nazis, where Martin Niemoller was the pastor. There she was confirmed by his assistant the Rev. Franz Hilderbrand who later fled to Britain because he was Jewish. Thus, she was very aware of the injustices of the Nazi regime and the suffering of its opponents.

After WWII she qualified as a medical doctor at the University of Marburg before meeting an old friend of her brother, Frank Eyck, who had fled to England in 1937 and served in the British army in British Intelligence. They were married in 1955 and Frank taught at the University of Exeter. In 1968 Rosemarie and Frank made the bold move to leave England and take up a new life in Calgary. The family travelled by ship from Liverpool to Quebec City and then across Canada by train to Calgary where Frank joined the History Department of the University of Calgary.

In 1977 Rosemarie and family moved to Bragg Creek and resided there until 2017. Rosemarie loved to take care of her vegetable garden and all her outdoor plants. She enjoyed being able to entertain numerous guests in her beautiful home and back garden with Bragg Creek running through the property. She also enjoyed many summer afternoons sitting on her deck overlooking the large back garden.

Rosemarie was a full time wife and mother to her husband and children. She selflessly dedicated her life to the physical care, spiritual enrichment, growth of knowledge and recreational activities of her husband and children.

She loved classical music and took great joy and solace in listening to the great composers Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, and Handel and enjoyed playing music on the piano at home as well as the organ at church.

Rosemarie enjoyed many years with the University of Calgary faculty women's book club and made many close friends through this. She was also a lover of animals and over the years the home included fish, hamsters, guinea pigs, cats (Spotty, Blackie, and Jazz) and a special dog, Whitey. With her husband Frank she enjoyed many trips together whether to Brazil, or Italy, or to more local locations such as Emerald Lake and Banff where they enjoyed many evenings dancing together.

In 2017 Rosemarie moved to Calgary and lived at Trinity Lodge until just prior to her passing. She enjoyed visits from family and friends, reading on her iPad, receiving her daily newspaper and always a cup of coffee and a sweet treat.

Rosemarie's sons would like to acknowledge the strong love and affection that Ninfa, Tes, Brandon, and Alphonse gave their mother throughout the years.

The family, and on mom's behalf, wish to express our greatest appreciation for the caring and compassionate dedication of the staff at Trinity Lodge. Also, special thanks to Unit 72, South Calgary Campus and Millrise Seniors Village.
