Obituary of Roy Fletcher

FLETCHER, Roy

August 7, 1932 - Northampton, England

February 11, 2022 - Calgary, Alberta

Roy Fletcher beloved husband of Brenda Fletcher (nee Deacon) of Calgary, AB, passed away on Friday, February 11, 2022, at the age of 89 years.

Roy was born in Northampton, England on August 7, 1932, to parents Walter and Mary Fletcher. Roy left school at the young age of 15 and for a time he was a truck driver.  He completed his mandatory service in the British Armed Forces, serving part of his time in Malaya.

Roy immigrated to Canada in 1957 after marrying the love of his life, Brenda Deacon, on March 23,1957. Upon arriving in Canada, the couple settled in Vancouver where Roy was accepted into the Canadian Pacific Police. Roy worked in Vancouver for about five years before he was posted to Revelstoke, B.C. where their daughter Michelle was born.  From Revelstoke, Roy was transferred to Calgary, AB where their first son Kevin was born.  Roy left the CP Police for a short time to try his hand at being an assistant Manager at the IGA in Rosetown, Saskatchewan with his cousin Ian Fletcher. This was where their second son Bruce was born.  Roy found that running a store was not his calling and rejoined the CP Police and was posted to Edmonton, Alberta.

As Roy moved up the ranks, he was posted to Red Deer, Alberta, and Vancouver B.C. and held his final posting in Calgary, Alberta. Roy retired from the CP Police in 1997 as Superintendent of the force. He and Brenda remained in Calgary until his death.

Roy was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion and volunteered his time with the Pet Access League Society (PALS). He was particularly proud of the time he spent in PALS with his dog, Casey.

Roy spent time walking and playing with his dog, enjoying golf with friends, watching soccer and CFL football and spending time with his family.  Roy also tried to learn how to ski while living in Revelstoke, however that ended in disaster with a broken leg, and he never tried it again. So much for the winter pastime.

Roy’s most memorable vacation was the cruise he and Brenda took through the Panama Canal with friends.  There were also the times that he tried to take his family out on Sylvan Lake with the little boat he bought.  Between the motor not starting and breaking down in the middle of the lake, it was quite an adventure.  Then there was the time when the boat trailer came off as the car was heading onto the highway.  Fortunately, the boat was retrieved, and no one was hurt.

Roy worked very hard to support his family and gave them all great starts to their lives.

Roy always made friends easily with his genuine smile. He was a kind and loving man, who was giving of his time and well thought of by his many friends to whom he was known to boast about his full head of wavy hair.

Besides his loving wife Brenda, Roy is survived by his two sons, Kevin (Carol) and Bruce (Nicole) Fletcher both of Calgary Alberta; daughter Michelle (Shane) Mahon of High River Alberta; six grandchildren, Mathew Fletcher, Sarah Fletcher, Colin Fletcher, Maia Fletcher, Liam Mahon, and Scott Mahon. Roy is also survived by his dog, Oreo, whom he loved immensely.

Roy was predeceased by two brothers, Jack, and Edward Fletcher; parents Walter and Mary; and dogs, Casey, Brandy, Sherry, Ceasar, Pepper, Lady, and Prince.

The family will be having a private gathering at a later date in accordance with Roy’s wishes. Condolences, memories, and photos can also be shared and viewed here.
