Obituary of Marko Djukic

August 13, 1956 – Peulje, Bosansko Grahovo, Yugoslavia

February 16, 2022 - Calgary, Alberta

Marko “Mark” Djukic, beloved husband of Catherine Djukic (nee Ryan), passed away on Wednesday, February 16, 2022, at the age of 65 years. Mark was born in Peulje, Bosansko Grahovo, Yugoslavia to the late Borislav Djukic and Ilinka Cucuz.

In November 1967 Mark immigrated to Canada with his mother and two sisters, to join his father, who had travelled to Canada in advance of the rest of the family to prepare for their arrival. In 1989 Mark moved to Burlington, Ontario where he met his wife Catherine and would welcome the birth of their son Alexander. A few years after Alex’s birth, Mark and Cathy moved to Winona, Ontario, where they raised their family together in their memorable home at 7 Sugarberry Court.

Mark spent 44 years working at Dofasco in Hamilton, Ontario as a Truck Mechanic and as a Millwright Trade Specialist. During his tenure at Dofasco, Mark was the longest-standing elected Fund Representative when he retired. Mark genuinely cared about his fellow co-workers, and he took great pride in providing mentorship to many young apprentices. He built such strong friendships with coworkers that he often referred to them as his family, or his “brothers”. With his “brothers” and various other family and friends, he would make countless ski trips to Ellicottville, NY, enjoying time on the slopes, teaching new skiers, and socializing in the Tannenbaum Lodge.

Mark will be remembered most for his selflessness. Mark found joy in helping and spending time with others. Whether it was working in the garden with Cathy, fixing an engine, coaching a sports team, teaching someone how to ski, or helping a recently laid-off co-worker find employment, Mark always had time and insisted on helping.

Mark and Cathy recently relocated to Calgary, Alberta in October 2019 to spend retirement close to their son Alex and daughter-in-law Sabrina. In July 2020, Mark welcomed the birth of his grandson, Sasha, and Mark cherished the eighteen months he was able to spend with his beloved grandson.

Mark is survived by his beloved wife of 33 years, Catherine, his son Alexander, daughter-in-law Sabrina, grandson Sasha, sister Milena Buac (Hamilton, ON), sister Smila Santi (Calgary, AB), brother-in-law David Santi (Calgary, AB), mother-in-law Elizabeth Ryan (Burlington, ON); and his six nieces, Jovanka Hurst and her husband Bob Hurst (Hamilton, ON), Susan Hurst (Hamilton, ON), Jelena Buac (Hamilton, ON), Laura Santi (Calgary, AB), Angela Santi (Peterborough, ON), and Julia Santi (Sarnia, ON); as well as numerous Kumovi, cousins and friends.
