Ernest (Ernie) Corry

Obituary of Ernest (Ernie) Robert Corry

January 11, 1931 - February 24, 2022

Dad passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 24, 2022 at the age of 91 years.

Ernie was born in Calgary on January 11, 1931. He moved to Acme, AB in 1942 and graduated from Acme High School in 1950. Ernie returned to Calgary after graduation and got a job working for The City of Calgary and in 1956 married the love of his life, Polly (nee Schmaltz). Together they had two girls.

After retiring from the City of Calgary at the age of 55, Ernie continued to enjoy a variety of outdoor activities including golf, hockey, baseball, cross country skiing, hunting, hiking and fishing. He was passionate about Genealogy and spent hours researching his family tree and compiling books and binders full of his studies. He found joy in woodworking and gardening and was always a “reader” who had a never-ending energy and spirit of learning.

Ernie is survived by his two daughters, Sandra Corry and Bonnie Cieslak (Dana). He is also survived by his sisters Ella Landels and Isabel Corry, and sister-in-law Vera Schmaltz, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Ernie was predeceased by his wife Polly with whom he enjoyed a wonderful marriage of 61 years. He was also predeceased by his parents Herman and Isabella Corry, brothers, Howard, Walter (Everna) and Herman (Betty). In addition, sister-in-laws Albina Schissel (Jerry), Barbara Olsen (Stan), and brother-in-laws, Bert Landels, Frank Schmaltz, (Grace), Nicki Schmaltz (Catherine), Raymond Schmaltz (Isabelle) and Tony Schmaltz.

Dad has often been thoughtfully described as a kind, honest and patient man. His sense of integrity and hard work along with his positive attitude and dedication has been a silent role model to all those who knew him. He was always supportive and protective of those he loved and proud of his family and heritage. He has left us all with the gift (by example) of living a compassionate selfless life.

On our Dad’s behalf we would like to thank all his family for their continued support over the years. Dad was very fortunate to have many great friends including the “hockey boys” and his “coffee buddies.” Another special group of people to be recognized for their friendship with Dad has to be the wonderful neighbors who were dear to his heart – the 7th street group. We would also like to thank Calgary Emergency Services as well as the staff at Rockyview and Foothills Hospitals. We cannot express our gratitude enough for the kind, compassionate care he received from all the health care providers at Southwood Hospice. We are eternally grateful.

A Funeral Service will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB) on Saturday, March 5, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home.
