TARRY, Roland Gregory “Greg”

March 1, 1947 – Prince Albert, Saskatchewan

February 2, 2022 – Cozumel, Mexico

Greg Tarry, of Ottawa, passed away on Wednesday, February 2, 2022, at the age of 74 years. He was born in Prince Albert, SK on March 1, 1947.

Greg worked at the Calgary Zoo from 1967 until his retirement in 2002. Following his retirement, he worked for more than a decade in Canada’s Accredited Zoos and Aquariums (CAZA) in Ottawa. Greg contributed immeasurably to the zoo community throughout his career. He had a passion for wildlife, for conservation, and for ensuring that Canadian zoos adhered to the highest professional standards. Greg also had a passion for travel and for sports.  He loved sunshine and the ocean and was most at home in his last years riding his road bike in Cozumel, Mexico. Greg will be remembered for his warmth, dedication, sense of humour, and patience.  He will also be remembered for his love of light beers, red wine, and Jimmy Buffett songs.

Greg is survived by his daughter, Sarah Tarry, living in Brussels, Belgium; and by his three sisters, Lynda Ramsdale of Calgary; Shannon Shaw and her husband Gordon Shaw of Calgary; and Cindy Liske of Stouffville, ON; as well as by countless nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A Celebration of Greg’s Life will be held at the McInnis & Holloway Funeral Home (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road SE, Calgary) on Saturday, April 2, 2022, at 2:00 p.m., followed by a reception at the funeral home. Guests are encouraged to dress comfortably and not somberly. 

Family and friends who are unable to attend in person are invited to watch the service that will be streamed live (see below) on the day of the service. Condolences, memories, and photos can also be shared and viewed here. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages those who wish to do so to make a donation to CAZA in Greg’s name.

In living memory of Greg Tarry, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes, Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road SE, Calgary, Ab t2x 3j3, Telephone: 403-256-9575.
