Florence Hayes (nee Chivilo)

Obituary of Florence Mary Hayes (nee Chivilo)

June 2, 1929 - Fort Macleod, Alberta

March 1, 2022 - Calgary, Alberta

Our beloved mother, Florence Hayes of Calgary, AB passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 1, 2022 at the age of 92.

Florence is lovingly remembered by her children, Cathy Hobday, Rod Hayes, Heather Hayes (Morris) and Gina Allen (Doug); grandchildren, Amber, Elizabeth, Katie, Matthew, Melanie, Luke, and Sean; great-grandchildren, Seth and Leila; sister Edith Lengerke; as well as many extended family and friends. She was predeceased by her husband Bill Hayes, sister Elsie Milne, and brother Peter Chivilo.

Florence lived a long full life which began in Fort Macleod, AB where she was born and raised.  She married Bill in 1951, and together they had four children. They settled in Fort Macleod until 1969, when they moved to Calgary.  In 1979 they began a great adventure by relocating to Anchorage, Alaska with their youngest daughter until returning home in 1991.

Florence was a devoted and caring mother and wife who enjoyed cooking, baking, decorating, and entertaining for large crowds. She loved music and was an accomplished pianist.  She was the volunteer organist at the United Church in Fort Macleod and the Presbyterian / Methodist Church in Anchorage. Florence played tennis in her younger years, and enjoyed playing bridge, especially with her many friends while living in Okotoks and at Trinity Lodge in Calgary.  Flowers and gardening were Florence’s life-long passion. Completing her florist certification and starting her own floral business at the age of 50 was her proudest achievement. She loved gardening, with a particular fondness for planting seeds in the greenhouse. She spent endless hours transplanting, tending to her plants, and watching them grow in her many beautiful gardens, pots, and baskets. Florence's artistic abilities continued in her later years. She began painting lessons and was very talented at creating beautiful paintings of landscapes and nature scenes. She was able to continue this creative pursuit well into her eighties by attending paint nights at various Calgary pubs.

Florence will be remembered for her warm and friendly nature, and her creativity will continue to inspire her children and grandchildren.  She will be missed by everyone who knew her.

The family would like to thank the staff at Chartwell Eau Claire for the warm, kind, and compassionate care of Florence these last few years.

A Celebration of Florence’s Life will be held in June 2022.  Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed here. As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations may be made in Florence’s name to a charity of choice.
