Margaret Whitby (nee Sommer)

Obituary of Margaret Louise Whitby (nee Sommer)

September 18, 1946 - Gull Lake, Saskatchewan

March 2, 2022 - Calgary, Alberta

Margaret Whitby of Calgary, AB, passed away suddenly and tragically in the comfort of her home on Wednesday, March 2, 2022 at the age of 75 years.

Margaret was born in Gull Lake, SK. She attended Twin Butte school. She then moved to Calgary, where she met Brian Whitby from Brandon, MB, whom she later married. They had two daughters, Delila and Dena. As a single mother, Margaret was a great example to her girls. She attended Mount Royal University College where she received a degree in Business Administration. This allowed her to have a successful career with the government of Canada for 40 years. But that also didn’t stop her from squeezing in 28 years of care, giving, and volunteer work. Throughout her busy life, she never wasted a moment.

Margaret really enjoyed the outdoors; she loved wildlife, and the many trails she hiked. When it was time to drive out of town, she was the one passing you on the highway. She loved to watch the Northern Lights and the Harvest Moon.

Margaret is survived by her two daughters, Dena Whitby (Norlon) and Delila Whitby, and her grandson Ryder Earl Reaney. Margaret also raised our kid sister Jessie Smith, and her two sons, Aiden and Bo Smith. She’s also survived by her brothers, Ernie (Carol) Sommer and William (Shirley) Sommer; and their children and grandchildren. Condolences, memories, and photos can also be shared and viewed here.

In living memory of Margaret Whitby, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes, Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.
