Marie Nelson of Calgary, AB, passed away on Friday, March 4, 2022 at the age of 93 years.

Marie was born in Leedale, AB on September 4, 1928. Marie trained to become a teacher at Normal School in Edmonton, AB. After teaching in Red Deer and Leslieville, she decided that teaching wasn’t for her and moved to Calgary to take an office position as a stenographer. She married Reinhardt Nelson on June 23, 1956, in Calgary, AB. Marie was a member of The Calgary Catholic Immigration Society for many years as their volunteer secretary.  She was also very active at the downtown senior center. Here, she really enjoyed learning and playing the game of snooker. One of her great passions was to travel the world with her seniors’ group. Marie travelled to England, Columbia, Malaysia, New Orleans, and Vancouver. Some of Marie’s favourite sayings were:

“Keep your eye on the ball, Let go and let God, don’t borrow trouble, and neither a borrower nor a lender be.”

Marie is survived by her children, Pat Nelson of Calgary, AB, Shirley (Steve) Malone of Calgary, AB, Jim (Sue) Nelson of Sarnia, ON, Rick Nelson of Calgary, AB, Cathie (Bill) Hossack of Calgary, AB, Sue Aldous (Brent) of Calgary, AB, Dave (Isabell) Nelson of Calgary, AB, and Irene (Doug) Carr of Calgary, AB; her grandchildren, Iain, Yvonne, Tiffany, Brittany, Samantha, Nathan, Joshua, Madison, Jonah and Anneka; and her great-grandchildren, Alex, Jakob, Sadie, Wyatt,  Jackson, Caleb, and Rebekah. Marie is survived by her sisters, Betty Schritt, Celine Baranky, Connie Anderson, and Louise O’Brien; her brothers, Ray Durand, and Charles Durand; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Marie was predeceased by her husband Reinhardt Nelson, her brother, Joseph Durand and her grandson Conrad Hossack.

A Celebration of Life will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB) on Thursday, March 10, 2022 at 10:30 a.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home. Family and friends who are unable to attend in person are invited to join Mrs. Nelson's service streamed live (see below) on the day of the service. For those who are unable to view live, a recording of the service will be posted. Condolences, memories, and photos can also be shared and viewed here.
