February 24, 1925 - Calgary, Alberta
March 9, 2022 - Calgary, Alberta

Vera Anne Ross passed away on Wednesday, March 9, 2022 peacefully after a brief illness, with her family close by. Vera, a proud, community minded Calgarian was born in Calgary on February 24, 1925 to Iris and Clarence Johnston. She attended Rideau Park and Central High School and went on to graduate from both the University of Alberta and the University of Calgary. Vera was a gifted educator, teaching a wide variety of subjects to students of all ages. Vera finished her teaching career in her favourite role as a junior high school librarian. Vera also inspired her family to prioritize education and in her later years could often be heard bragging of her grandchildren’s university accomplishments.

Vera was predeceased by her husband Don Ross, her brother Albert Johnston, and her grandson, Colin Park. She is survived by her two sons, David (Lorraine) and Alan (Barbara); her grandchildren, Megan, Marshall, Andrew, Tara, Sara, Stacy, Rebecca and James; and her great-grandchildren, Jude, Michael, Declan, Rose, Meredith, Isla, Esra, Mackenzie and Clara Anne, plus two en vente.

Throughout her life, Vera contributed to her community: Girl Guides, the Canadian Mental Health Association, the Canadian Club, The United Way and the University Women’s Club were among the organizations fortunate to benefit from her talent and energy. A cradle and lifetime Anglican, she was a committed member of the Cathedral Church of the Redeemer and latterly Christ Church Elbow Park. She was a patron of the arts and subscriber to Theatre Calgary, Alberta Theatre Projects, The CPO and the Calgary Opera. In her nineties, she was still giving book reviews. She was a generous donor and earned the United Way's Award of Excellence at age 96.
