Airdrie, Scotland - Calgary, Alberta

Alex Smith, beloved husband of June Smith of Calgary, AB, passed away on Monday, March 14, 2022, at the age of 92 years.

Alex will be greatly missed by June, his loving wife of 63 years; three sons Jeff, Colin (Kathleen), Greg and granddaughter Kyra.

Alex was born in Airdrie, Scotland on July 29,1929 and immigrated to Toronto in 1957 where one year later, he and June married. In 1976, the family moved to Calgary. Alex spent most of his career in construction development with Olympia &York and Marathon Realty. Outside of work, he had a passion for aircraft with an emphasis on WWII planes. He was an avid collector of WWII books, models and memorabilia and spent years volunteering at the Calgary Aerospace Museum.

Alex was proud of his Scottish heritage and was active in Scottish country dancing. He participated in many church choirs and sang bass in the Master’s Singers. Alex was an expert whistler, and you could always find him by following his tuneful whistling. He loved dogs and over the years, made many friends while walking Spitfire, Casey, Samantha, and Bailey.

A Memorial Service will be held at Southwood United Church, 10690 Elbow Drive SW, on Saturday, April 2, 2022, at 2:00 PM. Condolences, memories, and photos can also be shared and viewed here.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Calgary Humane Society.
