Peter Nettleton

Obituary of Peter Michael George Nettleton

December 12, 1930 - Calgary, Alberta

March 17, 2022 - Calgary, Alberta

After 91 incredible years, Peter has left us for a better place. He was born in Calgary to Kathleen Mary Avis (Muriel) and George Hugh Nettleton and was the younger brother of Patrick John.

Peter’s family immigrated from England in 1919. Growing up in the Calgary community of Killarney, his family was one of service. His father served in both World Wars, his mother rolled bandages for the Red Cross and wrote letters of comfort to soldiers. Peter’s brother was a pilot in the RAF (d.1940). In his youth, Peter was an active member of the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets. He attended Glengarry, Sunalta and Central High Schools and completed a degree in civil engineering at the University of Alberta in 1953. It was there he met the love of his life, Marilyn Lois Hymas. They married and were devoted soul mates for 68 years.

Immediately following university, Peter was recruited by Imperial Oil where he would work for 39 years. He advanced quickly taking on greater responsibilities in Tulsa, Edmonton, Calgary and Toronto. Peter’s industry expertise was legendary. Career accomplishments included leadership over price deregulation of Canada’s oil and natural gas industry, coordination of these changes with American energy policy, and as an expert witness at regulatory tribunals. Peter retired from Esso Resources Canada Limited in 1991 continuing as a private consultant for another 20 years. Peter loved the challenges of his work. He cared deeply for those he worked with regardless of their positions and viewpoints. He was a true mentor to many.

Peter loved his family and introduced his children to things that continue to be important in their lives today – dogs, reading, walking, swimming, running, tennis, skiing, canoeing, sailing, camping, cottaging, hiking, art, theatre, music, travel and gardening. He cared for many during his life, especially his mother who was widowed in 1954. The Anglican church community was his mainstay where he made many close friends and received spiritual support. He loved his grandchildren dearly and enjoyed visits, projects and hearing their news. He and Marilyn often traveled to England to stay connected to his English family. Their last trip was in 2019 to attend the wedding of their granddaughter Carlea Rose to Tom Scott. In 2021 he was blessed to meet their first great grandchild.

A consummate gentleman, Peter had a life well-lived. Gifted with a razor-sharp memory, he was a voracious reader, loved all things historical, and prided himself in staying fit. Retirement enabled him to do more of what he loved; hiking and skiing in the mountains, the solitude of tending to his magnificent garden, and walks in Victoria’s parks. He was actively involved in St. Stephen’s Church, the ROMEOs, Fifth Dimension Hiking Club, and the Remainders: a gentleman’s book club where during COVID he finally learned to type and ‘zoom’.

Peter received outstanding care over the years by Drs. Beach and Phillips and more recently by Drs. Wong and Cerny, the Palliative Care Team and the amazing nurses and staff of Unit 74, Rockyview Hospital. We cannot thank you enough.

He is dearly missed by his loving wife Marilyn, children Susan Marinucci (Frank), Sharon Nettleton (Rob Mulloy), Gord Nettleton (Karen); his grandchildren Carlea Rose Scott (Tom), Nicholas Marinucci (Lindsay), Tara Mulloy, Rory Mulloy, Megan Nettleton, Scott Nettleton, Shawn Nettleton and great grandson Hudson Woodford Scott.

Peter’s funeral will be held on Wednesday, May 4, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Stephen’s Anglican Church Calgary. A Celebration of Life will follow at the Calgary Petroleum Club. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Peter’s name to St. Stephen’s Anglican Church, the Calgary Humane Society and/or the Heart and Stroke Foundation (Calgary).
