Obituary of Edith Jean Isaac

January 10, 1937 - Rosthern, Saskatchewan

March 17, 2022 - Calgary, Alberta

Edie Isaac passed away on Thursday, March 17, 2022 at the age of 85 years.

She was born in Rosthern, Saskatchewan on January 10, 1937, the youngest of three children of Otto and Eugenie Braun.  After secondary school, she moved to Winnipeg, where she worked as a bookkeeper, and soon met the handsome and charming brother of a roommate in her boarding house. Edie and Wilfrid (Bill) Isaac were married in 1955, and enjoyed many adventures together, including moving to northern Manitoba to run their own mechanical business, and raising four children.  Edie took up snowmobile racing and was the proud winner of many trophies, as well as participating in a 700 km snowmobile trek from Snow Lake to Winnipeg, to participate in the Festival du Voyageur.

After the children had all moved on from home, Edie went back to college to obtain her RN, and eventually took a “short term” nursing position in Saudi Arabia – and ended up staying there for almost 15 years.  During those years she “upped the ante” on her adventures, which included scuba diving in the Red Sea and the Truk Islands, as well as solo touring Egypt, China, and Asia.  She has ridden camels and elephants, slept on the decks of riverboats and merchant ships, all at a time when most women of her age and era would never think of doing those things alone.

Upon retirement, Edie moved to Placencia, Belize, where she purchased a lot and built a house on the beach.  This was her dream retirement, and she left “Casa Edie” only when her health failed and forced her to return to Canada.

In the last years, she has been fortunate to live in Calgary, with all four of her children, several grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, one of which lived nearby. She was well cared for at Wentworth Manor and Cambridge Manor, and her family wishes to express gratitude for all the TLC that she was given over the years.  Specifically, we would like to warmly thank Dr. Rebecca Leonard for all of her care and consideration over the years. Edie and the family were indeed fortunate to have her.

Left with fond memories of Edie and her unique and adventurous life are her children Debra (Wayne), Tim (Penny), Teri, Kimberley (Tracy); grandchildren Stephen, Jennifer, Shannon, Stephanie (Jason), Andrew, Keegan (Christie) and Amie (Stephen); and step-grandchildren James, Charles (Kim), Richard Christa); and great-grandchildren Lilith, Malcolm, and Henry; as well as her much-loved grand-dog, Daenerys.

No formal memorial service will be held at this time; however, a celebration of life with those who knew Edie is planned at a later date.

In living memory of Edith Isaac, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes, Eastside, 5388 Memorial Drive NE, Calgary, AB T2A 3V9, Telephone: 403-248-8585.
