Obituary of Bryan Gilbert Pryce

PRYCE, Bryan Gilbert

April 22, 1931 – Wolverhampton, England

March 20, 2022 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with deep sorrow and much love, we mourn the sudden passing of Bryan Gilbert Pryce, beloved husband of Verna Pryce (nee Renner), of Calgary, AB, on Sunday, March 20, 2022, at the age of 90 years.

Bryan is survived by and will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 64 years, Verna; his daughters Kathryn (Dave) and Patricia; granddaughters, Emily (Jack) and Erin (Marcus); his sister-in-law Margaret (Robert Lawrence), niece Leslie (Ray Gosselin), nephew Bradley Lawrence (Kim), their children and many friends.

Bryan was predeceased by his father Horace Gilbert Pryce, his mother Florence, stepfather Hubert Brekelmans, nephew Jay Lawrence.

Bryan was born in Wolverhampton, England on April 22, 1931, the only child of Horace and Florence (Cox) Pryce.

His father passed away when Bryan was seven years old due to gas poisoning in World War I. During World War II Bryan’s mother met and married a Canadian soldier, Hubert Brekelmans.

Bryan immigrated to Ridgedale, Sask. with his re-patriated stepfather and his mother at the end of the war, in 1945 at the age of fourteen.

Bryan embraced life in his new country and completed high school in Ridgedale.  After completing a year of teacher training at Normal School in Saskatoon, he took a teaching position in a rural school near Ridgedale.  Realizing after three years that this was not the career choice for him, he returned to the University of Saskatchewan and earned his degree in Geological Engineering.

Upon graduation in 1958, Bryan and Verna, the love of his life, were married and he began his 30-year career with Imperial Oil. His career in the oil industry offered Bryan many opportunities and took the family to Medicine Hat, Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto, London, UK and Oslo, Norway.  When he retired from his position in Norway in 1987 Bryan and Verna returned to Calgary to be near their daughters.  In order to transition into his new life, he joined Remington Energy for three years.

Bryan loved the outdoors; camping, hiking and cross-country skiing with his family, always with a camera at the ready.  He enjoyed gardening and his lawn and shrubs always looked impeccable.  He loved the arts: music, books, and theatre.  He was an accomplished photographer and painter and many of his paintings hang in Calgary homes. Another of his favourite pastimes was woodworking, building dog houses for his daughter’s dogs and study desks for his granddaughters.  Verna and Bryan travelled extensively and enjoyed the people and every country they visited.

Bryan was genuinely interested in meeting people and hearing about their lives.  He was admired by his many friends and acquaintances for his warmth and generosity.  He was always a gentleman, and his active life belied his 90 years.

First and foremost, in Bryan’s life was his love and devotion to his family.  The sudden stroke that took him has left a huge void in our lives, but he will be in the hearts of his loving family forever.

In accordance with Bryan’s wishes a formal funeral will not be held.  A private celebration of his life will be held at a later date. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed here.

The family wishes to send a special thank you to the staff on Unit 61 at Foothills Hospital for their compassionate care during Bryan’s short stay.
