Obituary of Andrew Malcolm

MALCOLM, Allan Andrew

December 21, 1964 – Manchester, Great Britain

March 21, 2022 – Edmonton, Alberta

Andrew (Andy) Malcolm, of Edmonton, AB, passed away on Monday, March 21, 2022, at the age of 57 years.

Andrew was born in Manchester, England on December 21, 1964. He immigrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1970 with his four brothers and his mother, joining their father who had immigrated to Canada ahead of them.

Andrew spent his initial high school years in Dr. E.P Scarlett High School in Calgary and in 1984, he graduated from Foothills Composite High School in Okotoks, Alberta. Throughout his school career he demonstrated his passions for Mathematics and distance running.

Andrew loved the outdoors and grew up playing with his brothers catching frogs, snakes, building makeshift rafts in the “swamp” and going to summer camp in Manitoba. As an adult, he loved summer adventures with his best friend Mike, roughing it on public land camping trips, mountain-biking and generally enjoying fun in the wildlands of Alberta.

Andrew was also a huge hockey fan and could critique the lineup of the Edmonton Oilers as well as a professional sports analyst. He was also a pretty good hockey player in his own right and translated years of playing floor hockey in church basements and street hockey on frozen Winnipeg roads with his brothers into shinny skills and amateur league play on the ice.

Andrew was extremely talented, creative, incredibly curious, and very humble. He was an entrepreneur, worked as a machinist and had the mind of an engineer. He loved math and physics and would create the most amazing mechanical contraptions for fun and the enjoyment of others. His technical interests were also evident in his dedication as a sound and video technician for his church. He spent hours setting up, testing equipment for special events and then diligently making sure everything was put away. He also had artistic gifts. He was a talented cartoon sketch artist and creative mind. As a self-taught musician, he was always picking away at his guitar. He was a passionate writer and performer of many spiritual songs which blessed his church family.

He will be most remembered for his kind, gentle, easygoing, generous, and giving nature. As a middle child, he referred to himself as “Malcolm in the Middle” and he certainly demonstrated many of those classic traits. He was a peacemaker who could negotiate the space between his older siblings and his younger siblings, he was a true friend to all who knew him, and was calm, forgiving, and gracious under pressure. Andrew had a gift for relating to children and youth. He was a doting big brother to his younger brothers and sister. He was there for them as a protector, playmate, and even a math tutor. At his church he was known as the eternal young person.  He was a pillar in the youth group for many years, serving as an example that many young people could follow. He was playful and had a quirky sense of humor that was uniquely Andy. He was never one to try and fit a mold and was always true to his authentic self.

Andrew was a man of enduring faith and even as his body weakened in his final days, he was calm, at peace and never worried about what could come next. His favourite hymn was My Redeemer is Faithful and True which contains the lyrics:

My heart rejoices when I read the promise

'There is a place I am preparing for you.'

I know someday I'll see my Lord face to face,

‘Cause my Redeemer is faithful and true.

Andrew will be sadly missed by his parents Neville and Olga Malcolm, of Calgary, AB, four brothers, Jehu Malcolm (Wendy), of Calgary, AB., Wayne Malcolm (Stephanie) of Hamilton, ON., Robert Malcolm of Sacramento, California, and Adrian Malcolm of Calgary, AB., one younger sister Arlette Malcolm (Graham Twomey), of Calgary AB., one nephew Darnel Malcolm, cousins, and many friends.
