This photo is from the first time I had the chance to learn from Ken, in the summer of 2003. He organized an audacious field trip that involved transport by horse and wagon, common camping under what was essentially a circus tent, and thigh-burning climbs in the Rocky Mountains. All in a day's work for an old-school geologist, but perhaps a bit of a shock to some soft, desk-bound geologists used to their nightly frozen margaritas.
I love this photo because Ken's not breaking a sweat as he checks in on folks, while everyone else is looking at the climb yet to come. Ken had so much passion and energy and he was always happy to share it with those around him.
So sad to hear of Ken's passing. Ken and I started with Esso together in the early eighties after racing against each other at University. And, we retired from Esso within months of each other 30+ years later. One exceptional memory is when we made a trip together down to the US Corporate Track and Field Championships in San Jose in 1984 to compete for the Exxon track team. Attached is a picture of Ken about to receive his gold medal with Robert Radnoti after winning the 2x1 mile team race (Ken finished in a superb time of 4:09 with a strong kick). A a great race for Ken but also the first of many similar very fun trips over the years and the start of many life-long friendships for both of us. Tom Boone
