Obituary of Antonina Prado Gaston

May 10, 1930 – Dumalag, Capiz, Philippines

March 24, 2022 – Calgary, Alberta

We are here to celebrate the passing of our beloved mother (Nanay), Antonina P. Gaston of Calgary, AB, on March 24, 2022, at the age of 91 years. She was born in Dumalag, Capiz, Philippines on May 10, 1930.

She is lovingly remembered by her son Francis X. Gaston (Dale) and daughter Maria Dinah Gaston, as well as numerous relatives and friends here in Canada, USA and the Philippines.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, our Tatay, Ladislao P. Gaston in 1976 and by her parents, Alfonso Prado and Juanita Frias. She was one of ten siblings who have since passed away, Josefina, Cirila, Vicente, Tranquillino, Milagrosa, Candelario, Estrella, Gloria and Lourdes.

Nanay and Tatay were both teachers in the Philippines when they decided to take a leap of faith and take the family to Canada in 1967. They did this with assistance from the Notre Dame College through the Roman Catholic Church, of which they were truly dedicated. Their first posting was to help teach the Indigenous community of North West River in Labrador. Their future communities were Big River I.R., Port Simpson (Lax Kw'alaams), BC and Cochin (Moosomin I.R.). Nanay retired and lived in North Battleford before moving to Calgary. She was known by many of her friends to be compassionate and helpful and was always a great cook and baker. Her cake decorating skills were without comparison. She assisted in the sponsorship of many of her family to Canada. She was also a godmother to many baptismals and weddings.

Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at McInnis & Holloway (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB) on Wednesday, March 30, 2022 at 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m, and prayers and Tributes to follow at 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
