Obituary of Emanuele Iavasile

January 28, 1926 – Ururi, Italy

March 27, 2022 – Calgary, Alberta

Emanuele Iavasile, beloved husband of the late, Giuseppina Iavasile of Calgary, AB passed away on Sunday, March 27, 2022 at the age 96 years.

Emanuele was born on January 28, 1926 in Ururi, Campobasso, Italy to Rosaria Frate and Nicola Iavasile. He was the eldest of three children.

The challenges of losing his mother at a very young age helped to build his character. At the young age of 25, he immigrated to Montreal, Canada. After a few years in Canada, he returned to Italy, where he met his wife Giuseppina, the love of his life for 54 years. They were married in Sant’Antonio’s Basilica in Padova, Italy, on April 29, 1957. He returned to Canada in June 1957 and Giuseppina joined him later in December 1957.  He and Giuseppina made their home in Calgary, where they later welcomed two daughters, Antonietta and Angela.

His passions were the Catholic faith, biking, walking, gardening, wine making and sports of all kinds. He either walked or took the bus to church every Sunday, regardless of the weather, and he was a committed member of his church. His bike took him everywhere in the city, including to work. When he could no longer bike, he went for lengthy walks. He spent most of his career working for the City of Calgary in Parks and Recreation, until he retired in 1991. He was an avid gardener, and could often be seen sharing his harvest of vegetables with his neighbours. He loved watching sports at family gatherings, but he was a soccer fan above all.

Emanuele was a kind, gentle and patient man who dedicated his life to hard work and providing for his family. He especially valued his role as a husband, father, and nonno to his five grandchildren. He was a true family man, and will be dearly missed by his daughters, Antonietta (Roger Leonard) and Angela (Domenico Cusanelli); grandchildren, Veronica, Maria, Gabriel, Matteo, and Emanuel, and his close friends. He was predeceased by his wife Giuseppina and his parents.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Gerard’s Catholic Church (8944 Elbow Drive S.W., Calgary, AB) on Wednesday, April 6, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. Reception to follow at St Gerard’s Catholic Church.
