Judith (Judy) Rice

Obituary of Judith (Judy) Anne Rice

August 2, 1948 - April 2, 2022

Judy Rice passed away suddenly in Scottsdale, Arizona on Saturday, April 2, 2022. She was in the comfort of her closest family members throughout her several days in hospital.

Judy was born “Judith Anne Love” and raised in Montreal, QC attending school in Montreal West. She retained many friends from her high school days who have joined in regular reunions in the Montreal area over the years. She obtained a BA degree in 1969 from Bishop’s University in Lennoxville, QC, where she met her future husband, Bill Rice, and established many strong and lasting friendships. She obtained her teacher training and related certification from Macdonald College in Montreal, QC in 1970.

Judy and Bill were married in Montreal, QC in 1970 and then spent their first years together in Toronto, ON where Judy supported Bill through law school, teaching in the kindergarten program. Judy had a knack for relating to young children and loved her responsibilities. They moved to Calgary, AB in 1973 where Bill established his legal career and Judy continued her teaching career until the births of their two children, Tiffany in 1978 and Todd in 1981. Judy subsequently worked for several years with pre-school children as a volunteer with the Calgary CUPS program.

A number of words jump readily to mind in describing Judy’s character, the foremost being perfection, pride and determination. Family was her priority, but she was a friend and resource for many among her extended family, friends and local community. Judy made an invaluable contribution to her husband Bill’s relationships within the Bennett Jones law firm over 32 years and for 10 years within the Alberta Securities Commission and the Canadian Securities Administrators organization. Judy enjoyed the annual meetings of the International Organization of Securities Commissions and made many friends.

Her ambitions were to be “Super Wife”, “Super Mom” and “Super Granna” and she fulfilled all of those. She was the consummate hostess and organizer. The fridge and cupboards never disappointed and everyone took that for granted. Judy was always game to try anything and everything and never shirked from an opportunity or challenge. Judy had high expectations of others, but always doubled up in return.

Judy loved Scottsdale, where she managed a second home and the sounds of the local coyotes never failed to bring an immediate display of joy. That joy was broadcast through a beautiful smile that she displayed frequently and for many. She loved the sun and Scottsdale provided plenty of sunshine. Judy engaged in extensive travel covering much of the world and, in addition to Singapore, had a particular fondness for the south of France.

In recent years, Judy’s focus turned to her four granddaughters, Calia (9) and Jaiden (6), living in Singapore, and twins Victoria and Mackenzie (3) in Calgary, to each of whom she directed her love, care and teaching.

Judy is survived by her husband of 52 years, Bill, daughter Tiffany (Kevin Shaw), and son Todd (April Rice). She is also survived by her brother Tom (Dianne Love); as well as her precious granddaughters. She was predeceased by her parents, Len and Peggy Love. Judy was loved and will be deeply missed by us and many others.
