Obituary of Sophie Gajecki (nee Nogas)

March 5, 1931 - Lublin, Poland

April 7, 2022 - Calgary, Alberta

It is with heavy hearts the family announces the peaceful passing of Sophie Gajecki of Calgary, AB, on Thursday, April 7, 2022 at the age of 91 years.

Sophie was born in Lublin, Poland to Stanislaw and Katarzyna Nogas.  She immigrated to Taber, AB in 1950 as a young woman with her family, and later, relocated to Calgary in 1952. Sophie married the love of her life, Stanley Gajecki, on December 27, 1952, and was blessed with two daughters, Brenda and Regina.

Sophie loved travelling and flew to Hawaii many times with Stanley and also to Australia. She enjoyed camping in the interior of B.C. with the family, when the girls were young.  Later in life, Sophie also travelled to Victoria, Mexico, again to Hawaii, and to Muskoka, ON.

Sophie had a passion for sewing. She was an amazing self-taught seamstress. She worked at Sprung Clindin where she sewed leather and suede garments, police jackets, sleeping bags and awnings. She would sew dresses for her young daughters with matching leather purses. Another passion of hers was gardening. She had a green thumb and her and Stanley planted many vegetables and flowers at their house. She also enjoyed cooking various Polish dishes for the entire Gajecki family. Sophie enjoyed listening to music and dancing. At the retirement home, you would see her sitting right in front of the entertainers tapping her foot and clapping her hands. She had a zest for life and living it to the fullest. She will be most remembered for her love of life, her laughter, and her giving spirit.

Sophie is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Regina and Barry Singleton.  She was predeceased by her husband Stanley in 2001 and her daughter Brenda in 2009.

In life Sophie was loved by all who knew her, and in death she left the world with grace and dignity. You will be missed Mom, but never forgotten.

A Celebration of Sophie’s life will be held at a later date. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed here.

The family would like to thank Dr. Clark and all the Staff at the South Health Campus for their care and compassion.
