Obituary of Larry George Kettlewell

February 21, 1945 - Windsor Essex County, Ontario

April 9, 2022 - Calgary, Alberta

It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved husband, father and papa, Larry George Kettlewell of Calgary, AB, on Saturday, April 9, 2022 at the age of 77 years.

Larry was born in Windsor Essex County, ON, to parents, Verda June Kettlewell and Elvin George Henry Kettlewell. Larry moved to Independence, Missouri at the age of two with his family. Larry grew up working on the family farm and in the family hardware store in Independence. He graduated from Osage High School class of 1963, and later, went onto China Area Studies at the University of Hawaii, class of 1972. Larry started his career in the USA military, US Special Forces Airborne and went onto an exciting and varied career in US government and politics. He retired eleven years ago as Chief Information Security Officer for the State of Kansas.

After retiring, Larry and his family moved back to Calgary, AB, Canada where Larry embraced the mountains, the Calgary Flames, Tim Hortons, and the extended family. As they say, you can take the boy out of Canada, but you can’t take Canada out of the boy. Larry loved animals, especially dogs and cats, of which he had many in the last twenty years. Beau, a three-year-old Samoyed, was chosen by Larry and Meghan most recently.

It’s impossible to try and sum up the life of a man who lived his life so fully and who brought so much joy to others. Larry was a true light in the dark and will be missed so very much by his family and friends.

Larry is survived by his wife Catherine Kettlewell; his daughters, Meghan and Lindsay Culton; his daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter, Jocelyn, Dan and Ellie Matthews all of Calgary, AB; his brothers, Evan Kettlewell of Lake Lotawana, MO; and Robert Kettlewell and his wife Linda of Denver, CO; and his sister Linda Kettlewell of Missouri; and niece Ivy Kettlewell and nephew Nate Kettlewell of Missouri. He is also survived by his father-in-law, J.W. Bud Bird of Fredericton, NB; and his mother-in-law, Marilyn Robinson of Calgary, AB; as well as several other nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law across Canada and the US. Larry was predeceased by his parents, Verda June, and Elvin George Henry Kettlewell.
