Obituary of Kathleen Lawrence Longworth

November 22, 1921 – Edmonton, Alberta

April 30, 2022 – Calgary, Alberta

After reaching the grand age of 100 years, Kathleen Lawrence Longworth (nee Anderson) passed away quietly at the Brentwood Care Center in Calgary, AB.

Born to Irish and Scottish parents in Edmonton, AB, in 1921 she grew up with her sister, Margaret, at the Bon Accord Farm (NE of Edmonton) where they were an integral part of the community. She achieved a BSc in Household Economics from the University of Alberta in 1944. She then gained employment as a dietitian in Toronto and Vancouver hospitals before she married George Alfred Longworth III in 1949. It was then Kathleen began her life-long career as a wife, and mother of four.

Kathleen is predeceased by parents, Mary and Tom Anderson; her sister, Margaret Stelfox-Bos; and her husband George Alfred. Kathleen leaves behind a family who cherished her: daughters, Maureen Dufort and Joanne Canape (Roberto); sons Herbert Longworth (Marg) and James Longworth (Donna); eight grandchildren Bryan, Lauren, Jaclyn, Stephanie, Shawn, Andrea, Kaitlyn, and Meghan; and great-grandchildren Declan, Brynnlee, Kayla, Cullen, Camille, Braelyn, Oni and Chayce.

Kathleen was a lover of music (piano accompanist at church and music festivals, piano teacher), and an avid sportswoman (curling, golfing, bridge, birdwatcher, tai chi, fishing). She was a tireless hostess, a quietly devout christian, a tireless tutor, a fabulous homemaker and baker. Above all she was a steadfast friend, a devoted wife, and a patient and loving mother. She cherished and epitomized everything beautiful in life such as: pink roses, chirping robins and singing chickadees, a Chopin concerto, a hearty laugh, a sip of rum, and a game of cards with family and friends to name a few.

One of the last of the truly refined and genteel ladies, she passed gently and quietly, without fuss; much as she had lived.  She will be very much missed, forever remembered, and rightfully earned her angel wings.

The family wishes to acknowledge the staff at Brentwood Intercare in Calgary for their tireless care and attention. As well as a to Kathleen’s private companions and caregivers; Dora, Frida, and Marlene, to whom the family is eternally indebted for going above and beyond to give her a fabulous quality of life in her final years.
