Obituary of Victor Fornaro

October 26, 1945 – Francavillla al Mare, Italy

May 15, 2022 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we announce the passing of Victor Fornaro, beloved husband of Giovanna Fornaro on Sunday, May 15, 2022, at the age of 76.

Victor was born in Francavilla al Mare, Chieti, Italy on October 26, 1945. After his uncle Ray left Italy for Canada in 1954, Victor set his goals on the same opportunity. He wrote his uncle in Canada asking to be sponsored to come, and at the age of 13, Victor moved to Calgary, AB with his sister and parents to begin their new life. After six years of writing letters to his childhood sweetheart, Victor returned to Italy to marry the love of his life, Giovanna.

Besides his loving wife Giovanna, Victor is survived by his two daughters, Sandra (Mike) Dimitrijevic and Paula Turner; six grandchildren, Kyle Turner, Matthew Dimitrijevic, Nikholas Dimitrijevic, Alexia Turner, Dominique Turner, and Ereka Turner. Victor is also survived by his sister, Lina (Generoso) Monte, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, family, and friends. Victor was predeceased by his parents Pasquale and Ida Fornaro.

His first adventure began in 1967, when Victor graduated from SAIT with a specialization in automotive mechanics. Victors next adventure occurred in 1972, where he and his beloved wife purchased Hatchwear, a garment manufacturing business. They spent countless hours learning and growing the business together. Victor accomplished everything he wanted in life and was particularly proud of his involvement in the Italian, Abruzzese community. In 1970, Victor started the Abruzzese Club, committed to recognizing the Abruzzese culture in Canada. Victor was also proud of his contributions to the Italian Cultural Centre, Italian Sportsman’s Dinner, and the Calgary Italian Folk Dancers. His generosity, knowledge, and talents were shared with many people. Victor will be remembered for his profound love of golfing, gardening at the lake house, and being in the company of his family and friends. If you ever watched a Calgary Flames game, or shared a Rum and Coke with him, you knew he was always happy.

Victor and his family would like to sincerely thank Dr. Jeremy Debruyn, Dr. Cynthia Card, and the various medical professionals at the Agape Manor Hospice, who worked tirelessly providing Victor and his family care and comfort.
