May 15, 2022 – Calgary, Alberta

Maria Pia Nonis passed away peacefully, on May 15, 2022, at the Peter Lougheed Hospital.

Maria was born in the town of Domanins, Italy, on November 24, 1934. She and her twin sister, Laura, were the youngest of eight children. In 1958, Maria immigrated to Canada to be reunited with her brother and sister in British Columbia. Like many Europeans, her port of entry was Halifax, NS. Not speaking a word of English, but having a great deal of courage, she subsequently left Halifax and travelled by train across Canada to Vancouver.

Maria eventually moved to Calgary, AB, where she met her husband, Giovanni. Maria and Giovanni loved to travel and they took many road trips to the West Coast and the lower B.C. Mainland. Internationally, they travelled extensively to Hawaii, The Caribbean, Mexico, and Las Vegas. On several occasions, they also had the opportunity to visit family and friends in Italy. Maria will be remembered for her independent spirit, resiliency and generosity. Maria is lovingly remembered by her husband, Giovanni Nonis and her nieces and nephews in Canada, the USA, and Italy.
