Obituary of Erle Clifford Barkey
BARKEY, Erle Clifford
March 13, 1936 - June 1, 2022
Erle Clifford Barkey, beloved husband of Gloria Elizabeth Barkey (nee Weir), of Calgary, AB, passed away on June 1, 2022, at the age of 86 years, after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s.
Erle was born in Toronto, ON, the eldest of four siblings. A good student and athlete, he graduated from Pickering High School, completing grade 13 in 1955. His quiet, but deep faith in God, permeated his life. To learn more about Jesus, he attended Moody Bible Institute in Chicago and graduated in 1958. Erle met Gloria at the Stouffville youth centre. They married on May 27, 1961 and were blessed to share 61 years together.
Erle worked in construction as a carpenter, but also made beautiful hope chests and bookshelves, and renovated their home. He moved his wife and five children from Ontario to Alberta in 1979, and he considered himself a westerner from the day he arrived. He loved watching his children and grandchildren play sports. Although money was often tight, Erle always said, “But we’re rich in family.”
Erle will be greatly missed by his wife Gloria; his children, Glenna (Kurt) Lundberg, Suzanne (Ned) Benner, Steve (Kathy), Chris (Krista), and Darren (Shiela); grandchildren, Erin, Taylor, Hope, and Cole Lundberg; Luke (Tracy), Sam (Sagan), and Mikayla Benner; Kyle (Brit), and Brad (Jamie); Jonah, Eli, Marin, and Jill; Haley, and Anna; and five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings, Eric, Elaine, and Ron.
A Celebration of Erle’s Life will be held at Bonavista Evangelical Missionary Church (1509 Lake Ontario Drive SE, Calgary, AB) on Monday, June 6, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. Family and friends who are unable to attend in person are invited to join Mr Barkey's service via a youtube link Erle Barkey's Celebration of Life on the day of the service. Light refreshments will follow the service.
