Obituary of Rudy Kaethler

September 18, 1937 – Zaporizhzhya, Ukraine

June 2, 2022 – Calgary, Alberta

Rudy Kaethler of Calgary, passed away on Thursday, June 2, 2022, at the age of 84 years.

Rudy’s passion for making things led him to work as an engineer on large construction projects, often in the oil patch. He was on the forefront of computerizing operations wherever he worked, from the 60s onward. He bought an Apple II for his sons when they were young, triggering their lifelong passion for computing.

He loved to travel, taking the camping trailer through the forests of BC and much of the western USA. The importance of family also took him to Russia and Germany to connect with family long kept apart. He was also an avid cyclist and did many tours in Canada and the USA. He cycled the Golden triangle, the Highwood pass, and the San Juan islands with his sons and grandsons. He conquered the Red-Spoke (Redmond to Spokane, WA) at the age of 72.

Rudy was a devoted father and loving husband. He was a kind man who helped friends and family wherever he could, especially on computer problems or renovation projects. There was nothing he couldn’t build or fix for himself. He was a doting and playful grandfather with a big heart and easy smile.

Rudy joins his beloved wife, Luella, who passed away 4 years ago. Rudy is survived by his three sons and three daughters-in-law, Neil and Veronica, Richard and Judy, and Stanley and Kirsty; four grandchildren, Alexandra, Daniel, Andrew, and Sonya; as well as his brother Harry, and sister Hilda. 

Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at McInnis & Holloway (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road SE, Calgary, AB) on Tuesday, June 7, 2022 from 10:00am. Family and friends who are unable to attend in person are invited to join Mr Kaethler's service streamed live (see below) on the day of the service.
