Obituary of Roman Solowiejko

November 19, 1946 - Frille, Germany

 June 6, 2022 - Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Roman (Roy) Solowiejko of Calgary, AB on Monday, June 6, 2022 at the age of 75 years.

He leaves to mourn his sister Lidia Solowiejko-Lemay, his nephew Paul (Marni) Lemay; his nieces, Natasha (Derek) Borowka, Tania (Roy Klassen) Lemay; great-nieces and great-nephew, Alisha and Sophie (Andy Roy), Matthew (Jordyn) and Emily, Mika and Hanna; and many cherished friends and neighbours. He was predeceased by his parents, Bazyli and Natalia (Dudicz) Solowiejko, and his brother-in-law René Lemay.

Roman was born in Frille, Germany, and immigrated with his family to Calgary, AB in 1949.  In his youth, he was an avid and successful athlete and took part in many golf and badminton tournaments. While attending Crescent Heights High School, he proved to be an exceptional student, and, at the age of 16, was accepted to the University of Alberta, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History and Political Science. He remained a lifelong learner with an especially keen interest in Slavic History; he loved to read, play chess, engage in debate, but above all, spend time with family and friends.

Roman provided much love, devotion, and care to his parents in their last years, visited often with his sister and her husband, and doted on his nephew and nieces, and their children. He was very much part of his community of Saint George’s Heights, enjoying the company of neighbours, and always eager to lend a helping hand. He was also a very active member of All Saints Russian Orthodox Church, a church that his father had helped rebuild in 1959, devoting a great part of his time to its renovation and maintenance, to researching and writing its history, in addition to attending services and events with his fellow parishioners.

Roman lived a life of integrity and service.  He had a gentle heart, was generous with his time and skills with all of those who knew him and loved to share in conversation with them.  His consistent kindness and support for others, along with his warmth and good cheer, made him a joy to be with.  He will be lovingly remembered and sorely missed.

Funeral Service will be held at All Saints Russian Orthodox Church (905-8 Avenue N.E., Calgary), on Saturday, June 11, 2022 at 11:30 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery. Luncheon to follow. Family and friends who are unable to attend in person are invited to join Roman’s service streamed live (see below) on the day of the service.
