Condolences
Re: Our Dear Friend - Bruce Malcolm
Bruce Malcolm was a wonderful friend of both Rae and I, and we are so sorry to hear of his passing. We did not meet him until 1994, when a group of us (mainly Calgarians), purchased units in an apartment building in Elkford, BC. Bruce and his wife Sue initiated and led many of the hiking and skiing adventures that we shared. We have so many great memories of the happy hours and card games that they hosted in their next-door apartment. Bruce was incredibly strong and resilient in his outdoor pursuits – he was almost impossible to keep up with when hiking, cross-country skiing, snow-shoeing or biking. “Bush-whacking” was his specialty! The only time I (Murray) can remember out-running him was when we were confronted by a grizzly bear on a mountain trail! After moving to Victoria, we sold our Elkford get-away, but we still kept contact with Bruce and Sue in Calgary. They would occasionally visit us on the “wet coast”. As Bruce's health gradually failed, I would talk to him weekly by phone. At one point, I applied to donate a kidney to him, but I was rejected following medical-compatibility testing. We discussed darn-near everything (except “rugby”, which I know absolutely nothing about). Politics, books, families and faith were high on the list of subjects we often chatted about. Our sincerest condolences to Gary, Susan and Karen and Bruce's esteemed grand children. Rae and I already miss Bruce greatly. Hasta la victoria final, companero Bruce … Presente! It was a pleasure knowing Bruce all these years through Rugby. We always enjoyed seeing him and having a visit. He will be missed by all.
The Kazakoff Family
We have known Bruce for over 20 years and shared his passion for the mountains. In Elkford BC we hiked, backpacked, camped, snowshoed and X-country skied. Along with his wife Sue, we had a special bond with friends who gathered at the fire pit for potlucks, campfire songs and camaraderie. Bruce was always keen to lead us on wilderness adventures, including “getting lost” on a hike to Grizzly Lake OR unique ways to avoid grizzlies!
In Calgary we also had great friends who enjoyed day trips/ dinners with Bruce and Sue. On a mountain top Bruce just beamed; we’re grateful for these “Cloud 9” experiences with them. The view from heaven is even better!
Bruce was a “Saint” of a man. His interest in the betterment of the game of rugby was evident from the commitment he made to refereeing the sport, and to the amount of coaching he provided from this unique vantage point to many players new to the game, your truly included.
We had many great times with Sue and Bruce often hiking in the mountains or sharing food and drink.
He will be missed.

On behalf on my Dad Colin Malcolm and the rest of our family in NZ and Australia we pass on our deepest sympathy to Gary, Susan, Karen and their families. The first time my Dad came back from Canada in the 80's he had permed his hair, fortunately five years ago he did not do it again. He had the best time ever with Uncle Bruce and even managed to get on local TV. They talked and talked and talked....I know that Uncle Bruce will be sadly missed by all the Malcolm family in New Zealand.
I had the pleasure of having Bruce referee many rugby games I played in from 1976-87. He was a class act and always a pleasure to talk to. My condolences to his family and friends. He will be missed by all that knew him.

Gary, Susan & Karen we were very sad to hear the news about Bruce when it reached us in Toronto. He was a wonderful Dad to all of you but also a wonderful friend to both of us when we lived in Calgary. Without the support and encouragement of Bruce, especially when things were against me, I would never have had the success I did referring nor experienced a cold New Zealand winter on the fields of Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland. Bruce was with doubt one of the best referees in Canada and the Calgary Rugby Community from schools to seniors were lucky to have him every time he took to the field. He was also a dedicated referee coach and many of us benefited from his guidance and commitment to the craft of refereeing. We know you will all miss him!
We first met Bruce when he owned a condo in Elkford,BC in 1994. We have wonderful memories of our many hikes where Bruce often led us into new adventures exploring the wilderness. We climbed Wapiti Mountain and Bruce led us on a race to the top. We remember all the wonderful dinners when we engaged in conversations as well as games, late into the night.. We enjoyed hours spent in laughter around the Deerborne Firepit.
We miss Bruce’s enthusiasm and his energy for life. We miss his sparkling eyes and love and acceptance. We love you Bruce and look forward to meeting you again in Heaven.
Heartfelt Condolences to Gary, Susan and Karen. Bruce was always kind, generous and what a great Dad!
