Obituary of Margaret “Liz” Elizabeth McGuffin

July 16, 1932 – Saint John, New Brunswick
June 17, 2022 – Calgary, Alberta

Liz McGuffin, beloved wife of the late John McGuffin, of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 17, 2022, at the age of 89 years old, just shy of her 90th birthday.

Liz was born in Saint John, New Brunswick to Ronald and Beth Ralston and they moved to Calgary when Liz was two years old. This is where she would meet her late husband John McGuffin, known affectionately as the “boy next door.” Liz and John were married on June 20, 1959. Liz graduated from Central Memorial High School before pursuing a degree in nursing at the Vancouver General Hospital. She was active in Junior League and sold World Book by the time the kids were in school. Years later, Liz went on to build her own business/company, Paradon Medical Services, which she owned for ten years. In the late 70’s and not shy of being in the limelight, Liz was a talk show host on Shaw Cable TV for a period of time.

Liz was an accomplished equestrian and speed skater growing up and continued to visit Spruce Meadows in her later years. She was an avid tennis player and curler, known for her excellent skills on the court and ice. Liz was a long-time member of Grace Presbyterian Church and a member of the Glencoe Club for a total of 56 years. She and John loved hiking in the Rockies and spending summers in the Shuswap with her good friends Pat and Bob Mills. She will be forever remembered as a tough and spunky lady with no filter, who enjoyed a glass of wine and a good time. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Liz is survived by her daughter Alison Muir and her son Ron McGuffin. She was a proud grandmother to four beautiful granddaughters, Kennedy Muir, Ellen Muir, Sarah McGuffin, and Emily McGuffin.

A Celebration of Liz’s Life will be held at Grace Presbyterian Church (1009 - 15 Avenue Southwest, Calgary, AB) on Saturday, July 16, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Church. Condolences, memories, and photos can also be shared and viewed here.
