Obituary of Joy Nixon
NIXON, Joyce Elaine (nee Dobry)
June 19, 1942 – Viking, Alberta
June 17, 2022 – Calgary, Alberta
Joy was born in Viking, AB, to parents Helen and Lumir Dobry. Joy completed studies at the University of Alberta in Edmonton in 1962, and then taught at Ryley and Calgary, AB.
In 1965, Joy traveled to Sydney, Australia, where she married her husband Bill and began her Australian teaching career. Her first son David was born in Sydney in 1971, and after returning to Canada in 1972, Joy gave birth to her second son Andrew in 1975.
Joy’s passion for soft fabric arts focused on quilting as an art form that she loved and excelled at. Over the years, she has taught many hundreds of Calgary ladies and produced a multitude of excellent quilts which are treasured by friends and family.
Besides her husband Bill, Joy is survived by her two sons, David, and Andrew; her sister Linda Allard of Edmonton, AB, and her brother Doug Dobry of Camrose, AB. Joy was predeceased by her parents, Lumir and Helen Dobry.
A Celebration of Life for Joy will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB), on Wednesday, July 6, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home.
